This is what I have right now, and I love it.

Logitech Office Internet Pro: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16823126164
It's cheap and it feels good to type on, plus it's very silent. The INS-DEL keys are in the same format except they removed the INS key (which is pretty useless) and enlarged the DEL key.

Then I have a Mx510... very good but it gets dirty too easily, and I still think it might be a bit small.

If I had more money, I'd get the Logitech Elite, which is the same thing with a bunch of more buttons and a scroll wheel to the side. As for mouse, maybe a Mx518 or a G5 when it comes out. I still don't trust wireless yet... my last wireless mouse was way screwy.

at home i have a http://store.yahoo.com/directron/dellsk8125.html which I paid $3 for at the local parts supplier. (refurb, from a working pull) literally the best $3 ever spent.

I love both those keyboards a lot.

MY GOSH!! I THINK YOU FOUND IT!! That is the Mitsumi Keyboard I was talking about, I think*. I didn't know that they were still around!

"haha, I used to love that "springy clickyness", several years ago(maybe 8 years?) I used a mitsumi keyboard in a database class, it had that and I loved it. I couldn't find that keyboard online so I have no idea, in fact I don't even know if mitsumi keyboards exist anymore. As for the model M, I've done a search for that as well, do they make "newer" models of it? Everything I've seen were pictures of old-beat-up-discolored-beige model M's that were Ps2 or earlier."

BLASPHEMY!
Really, nothing feels as good. They feel like a typewriter--you get real feedback. With membrane keyboards, it's hard to tell if a key has really been pressed, or just half-pressed, and with most, you can easily fatfinger two keys. Also, no Windows keys, which is a great feature all by itself.

You can buy black ones., or make them black.

I've got the Logitech Elite keyboard. Wireless is definitely not necessary. I discovered that after buying it.

I use pretty much exclusivly IBM Model M keyboards. 4 of the 5 that I own are rekeyed to Dvorak.

I see that the model M has quite a few loyal fans. I need to get a hold of one myself to relive the experience.

Summary of thread: There are as many preferences as there are users and there's no consensus. Might as well wrap this one up.

does anyone know of any keyboards that require the least amount of pressure as well as the least amount of distance a key needs to travel in order to be hit?

Generally speaking, any slim laptop style keyboard vs. a standard traditional desktop style keyboard.
