Little sucker is cute, and as much as I've heard stuff about rabies and daytime activity and such, I'm pretty sure raccoons have just adjusted to living in the same space as humans. While I was growing up we always had raccoons hanging around in groups, young, old, big, small, daytime, nighttime, and they were never once afraid of us...just wanted a good meal from the bird feeder.

I'd live trap it and drive a ways and drop it in a field...that's what my granddad used to do when he was a bit younger.

That's horrible.

Better than the rat poison suggestions. Rat poison is a slow painful death.

Desert Eagle .50 + Raccoon head + Trigger pull = No more raccoon problems (other than cleanup).

Dude, you need to shoot it.

If you trap it and take it somewhere else it has a good chance of showing back up, and not being able to be caught in a trap again.

With a little kid around you need to take the safe route, they are not cute when they are cornered and could really hurt a kid.

oh, don't shoot it with a pistol.

buy a paintball gun or potato/marshmallow gun and shoot it.

+1

Raccoons are the reason I keep the AR right by the door. Even at night, they can't run from my surefire mounted to the handguards.

This is what we did....we rented a Have-A-Heart from a local rental company,
trapped it, and released it deep in the woods.

It was a better feeling than killing the racoon...

Is it really worth risking the well-being of your family just to save the life of a raccoon? When we lived in the country, we kept a live-trap set up at all times inside our barn where the cats lived. The cats learned to stay away from it, but we caught all kinds of other critters (skunks, raccoons, possums, strays, etc..).

We always took the raccoons that we shot to the vet (the ones that were trapped during the day), and several of them tested positive for rabies. We even had some stray cats that we shot test positive for rabies.

Moral of the story: If there was a wild animal exibiting strange behavior on our property, it got shot.

Exactly. Try cornering him and seeing how friendly he is then. You need to shoot it or have it shot by someone else before someone gets hurt.

Raccoons don't run unless you run at them... They're extremely brave and will basically do anything for a meal, particularly human food. I was camping once and a guy at the campsite left a can of crisco in the bed of his truck. The next morning, the lid was chewed off and there was blood all over the metal lip of the can where a raccoon had decided to eat some crisco.

I recommend either getting a trap or baiting some food with rat poison. The first option is the most humane and won't end up with a rotting carcass somewhere around your house.

So I step outside, and I see a huge raccoon sitting 4-5 feet away from me, staring at me, not even afraid. Damn!

...

Clearly, he's not afraid of the humans at all.

Theres a good chance it has rabies. Not being afraid of humans is one of the signs. Another is activity during the day. Have you seen it come out in daylight at all? I lived in the country long enough to know that you dont mess around when it comes to raccoons.

If it's messing around with your cats, live trap it and shoot it. Its not worth the risk of having your cats end up with rabies, and then yourself (or your kids).

Yes! It came during the day once, and made a mess while my wife and daughter were playing upstairs. I guess I'd better get this taken care of sooner than later.

That brought to mind the Far Side cartoon where the woman has barricaded and nailed shut the doggie door, and she's yelling to the dog outside, "Here, Fifi! C'mon!...Faster, Fifi!"

wouldn't your cat/kid like a playmate - of course he'll need his shots.
They look cute but raccoons do NOT make good pets. Nor do foxes. Nor most waterfowl.
There is supposedly a variety of domesticated geese but I have never seen them.

Anyway, I recommend lots of ammonia or rat poison.

I have a firned who was a pet duck. It is kinda cool. House trained and everything!
