1392x1044?
well it's 8x6 less than 1400x1050 so it should be fine...kind of an odd chocie though...lol

Hey, neat, I'm at 1400x1050! WTG, Leo. I'm at 75Hz right now to play it safe. Any idea if it's OK for me to try 85Hz? This tube's ratings:

Vert: 50-160 Hz
Horz: 31-93 kHz
1600x1200 max.

It's speced to do 1280x1024@85Hz which I normally use and that works great. However, it's only speced to do 1600x1200@75Hz (hey, it's > 3 years old).

I'm off to the Hitachi site to check again for more information...

yup...it's pretty easy in Win98...but in 2k it's a whole 'nother story..after spending a good 10 mins of searching..I *thought* i found what I was looking for, but it's this insnaly cryptic thing and when I thought I fixed it, I managed to lose the ability to set the 1600x1024 resolution...lol...*sigh*

Where's the |337 Anandtech hax0rs when we need them?!?!?!?

Here is another trick.....

Add the resolution

720x480 !!!!

Now watch DVD's at this resolution. Your software DVD player will not have to resize the movie frames, and with TV out, you will be producing image quality that will surpass high end standalone DVD players!!!!!

Add this to the win2k nv4_disp.inf detonator driver file. You must add it in the CORRECT LOCATION of the inf file (should be self explanitory when you edit it). And reinstall the drivers.

HKR,, NV15_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "8 720 480 60 70 72 75 85 100 120 0"

EDIT: Make sure you edit YOUR current nvidia video card. The example above is for the NV15 (as you can see from the "NV15_Modes&quot.

Also, you can change the "16 720 480.. part. The 16 is for the number of color bits, 720 480 being the resolution. So if you want 1400x1050 16 bit add this....

HKR,, NV15_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "16 1400 1050 60 70 72 75 85 100 120 0"

The numbers after the resolution are probably the refresh rates.

OK, I set 1400x1050 with no luck with my Voodoo 3 in 16 and 32 bit modes in Windows 98. That screen area bar in the Display Properties still does not offer it.

So I tried 1392x1044 (multiples of 4) and it still doesn't work. Am I doing this correctly? My value is "" or "75" - both don't work, even after reboots.

Mixxen, That's so obvious it's just brilliant. Good work.

Now if I can only figure this out with my Voodoo 3 under Windows 2000 (or even Windows 98). I'm scrolling through my Voodoo3.inf file.

Eug,

In addition to the default key string value Vinny shows in his snapshot, you might need another string value called ModeRefreshRateList. Try adding that string value and fill it with a list of refresh rates (eg. 60,70,72,75).

Oh and be sure to add these keys to the proper branch denoting the color depth you're using (probably 32 or 16).

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Display\0000\MODES\32\ModeRefreshRateList

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Display\0000\MODES\32\1392,1044\ModeRefreshRateList

So I tried adding "75,85" under "ModeRefreshRateList" in two different spots (see above). Neither worked (and I rebooted too). Dunno why I'd need it though, since all of my options for resolutions have no values and never have. I do note, however, I have several more resolutions listed which don't show up either. However, these are all ABOVE 1600x1200, and I doubt my monitor would display those (Samsung 950p).

"I notice you mentioned 1392x1044. Any particular reason for those dimensions?"

Absolutely, and it's not a fetish for obscurity This was the max resolution at which my (ex) ViewSonic PT775 could accomplish 85Hz. And I didn't want to go any lower than 85Hz. Now I'm enjoying my Sony G500 which can do 1600x1200 @98Hz (that's probably how I'll use it.) But, I need to receive my MX before I can do that.

Eug:

Is "0000" the only branch listed?
You might want to try the last one listed if it's there.

Odd...I didn't need to add the extra mode refresh string, I don't even have to restart, the new resolution appears right away on the quickres util of 98SE.

Sorry EUG,

I was looking at the win2k voodoo3.inf file and it is horrible...

Compare that to this nvidia inf file...

HKR,, NV11DDR_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "16 1024 768 60 70 72 75 85 100 120 0"
HKR,, NV11DDR_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "32 1024 768 60 70 72 75 85 100 120 0"

I bet both do the exact same things.

Eug,

Hmmmm... I looked at it again and I did see a pattern...try adding these lines in their relative places... (don't include the first and last line, put the new lines between them though)

...............0,1024\100Hz",Supported,,"BPP+8+16+32,DDRAW"

HKR,"TIMINGS\1400,1050\60Hz",Supported,,"BPP+8+16+32,DDRAW"

HKR,"TIMINGS\1400,1050\75Hz",Supported,,"BPP+8+16+32,DDRAW"
HKR,"TIMINGS\1400,1050\80Hz",Supported,,"BPP+8+16+32,DDRAW"
HKR,"TIMINGS\1400,1050\85Hz",Supported,,"BPP+8+16+32,DDRAW"
HKR,"TIMINGS\1400,1050\100Hz",Supported,,"BPP+8+16+32,DDRAW"

HKR,"TIMINGS\1600,1024\60Hz",,,"2096,1632,179..............

Then reinstall the drivers. Let us know what happens.

Well...I've tried 1400x1050 in Win2k, and it absolutely refuses to stick. Thanks for the advice Mixxen but I can never get the 1400x1050 resolution to stick whenever I reboot....it defaults back to 1280x1024 every time for some reason

I have a GTS 2 bts

What I wonder is, has anyone been able to set resolutions above 2048x1536? No sane reason to use that, but I suspect vidcards don't support anything beyond that anyway.

Ciber, you're quite right (1394 *3/4 = 1044). Thanks for keeping my pet resolution alive!

pg19,

You are reinstalling fresh drivers right? You need to edit the nv4_disp.inf in the driver package and then reinstall. Probably a good idea to first delete the nv4_disp.inf and all the oemXX.inf files in your c:\winnt\inf directory, then reinstall.

After the computer reboots then you should have an option for the new resolution under display properties.

Since you have a GF2 then you need to edit the NV15XXX_Modes. Probably a good idea to edit all the NV15XXX modes, since I have no idea what DDR/BR/GL stand for.

pg19,

okay I think there is a bug with win2k or the drivers.

I have 14 display options. If you see 10+ settings and no 1400x1050 setting, then you install or modified the file wrong. If you see less than 10 settings, close the window and reopen it (do this until you see 10+ settings).

Hope that helps.

EDIT: Seems to work fine with the new 6.62 drivers.

Sweet thread! I'm now running at 1400x1050@85Hz on my GeForce2 GTS and KDS Avitron AV-195TF instead of 1280x1024@85Hz

Mixxen - Why watch DVDs at 720x480? Wouldn't 1440x960 be better or am I not understanding things correctly?

Dantzig,

DVD's are mastered at 720x480. Many TV Out cards only support up to 800x600, and thus 720x480 would be optimal. Trust me, there is a big difference (no jaggies from resizing ).

1440x960 may produce better image quality on a monitor, but I don't see why it would.

i have an ATI Rage Fury 32mb... i tried adding

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Display\0000\MODES\32\1280,960

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Display\0000\MODES\16\1280,960

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Display\0000\MODES\8\1280,960

but that resolution doesnt show up...

in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Display\, 0000 is the only one that shows up... any ideas?

-edit-

Nevermind,
I can't get it to work.

Try this on Windows 2000:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{ .... }

now there'll be a list of { ..... }, which is your hardware list.
You can browse through them, and find what hardwar it is on the right hand screen.
Like :
Universal Serial Bus Controllers
DVD/CD-ROM drives
etc..
go until you find
Monitors

Under monitors there is: (on my reg)
0000
0001
0002

Browse those folders to find which corresponds to your monitor.

Like on mine,
0001 shows:
DriverDesc: Sony CPD-G200

So, I assume that's the one.

under Modes:
There is 1600,1200
I think this is where you can make a new Key of whatever resolution you want.

I don't know if this'll work.. will let you know as soon as I find out.
