Is it just me, or is this extremely RUDE? I went to the local Japan Express joint to pickup a call-in order and the lady in front of me is yapping on the phone while trying to fumble with her money. At the same time, the poor checkout lady is trying to talk to this woman to tell her the total. Dumb biatch on the phone just keeps yapping away to the person on the phone while saying to the checkout lady "huh, huh, what?"

GET OFF THE PHONE YOU INCONSIDERATE ASS!!

I know that at the local post office, they have signs up that say turn off phones (more specifically stay off your damn phone) when coming to the counter. People don't respect the signs, however.

Idunno, just seems as though people just don't give a shit anymore.

ill take a call in line, but when its my turn ill tell the caller to hold on and deal with my business before continuing yapping. if its important enough, ive gotten out of line to deal with it.

This applies in many situations, not just the one you mentioned. I wholeheartedly agree.

I was at the liquor store a few days ago picking up a dozen Canadians to enjoy over the weekend. Walking back to the front of the store I noticed that another checkout was about to open and headed in that direction. Some idiot pushed past me and another guy to get the front of the line and then proceeded to argue loudly with someone on his cell phone while the clerk attempted to serve him. The clerk got so frustrated that she decided she needed to see two pieces of ID and jerk him around a little before letting him pay. He never did get off the phone and after he left she smiled at me and said sorry for the delay but she just wanted to get even for him being so rude.

Good on her.

Depends on the location. I wouldn't remove it in a fast food joint .. I wouldn't wear one anywhere else, though.

If the waiter didnt need the tip so bad they'd probably tell the customer to piss off.
I would support that.

I'm anti-cellphone. I say no cell phone use inside public buildings (excluding offices) or while driving. Punishable by flinging into the sun followed by a warning citation.

People really don't give a shit anymore. They live off their cell phones and can't put it down and not be rude. Usually if I am on the phone I will actually tell the person on the phone to hold on and pay complete attention to whomever is attending to me. I don't think that is as bad.

Ooh, that pisses me off too. There's some relatively new guy at work who wears hats inside all of the time.

Why is the cellphone looked at so much differently than talking to someone in person?

Is it the physical act of holding the phone or what? What if a headset was used? Is it less or equally rude to hold a conversation with someone standing right next to you while being served?

I think it mostly has to do with the inability to control how loud you are talking when on a cell phone.

Wow, that doesn't even raise a tiny blip on my care-o-meter. WGAF if people are wearing hats inside? Really? It's one thing if you're military, because it's part of the uniform code, but otherwise, why would you possibly give a shit if someone else is wearing a hat inside?

as well as the detached feeling since that person youre talking to isnt present. if you walked into a restaurant and stood behind two people chatting loudly youd not think twice about it. and i have no issues with volume on my phone, i speak as low as i can, im paranoid about people hearing what im saying. kind of a weird quirk about me. it bugs my kids, they think im hiding stuff if i walk out back to talk on the phone

im wondering if anyone other than military/ex-military cares about this as well. i always wear a hat and only take it off for the national anthem

Place I work, we have 2 signs that say no cell phones at the counter. If they're yapping away when it's their turn to order, we just ignore them until they get off.

I am seeing more of those signs at the counter "We'll be happy to serve you when you have finished your cell phone call."
