PET PEEVE: I hate being introduced as my girlfriend's 'friend!'

On Sunday, my girlfriend and I went to a graduation party for a friend of my girlfriend who finished high school. When we walked in the house, the graduate introduced me to her family as my girlfriend's "friend, Mike."

Okay, I could understand using 'friend' if we'd been together for a short time, but it's been almost two years since we met, and I think we're both pretty comfortable with the terms 'boyfriend' and 'girlfriend.'

Ugh; I don't usually mind political correctness, but being referred to as my girlfriend's 'friend' makes me feel like I'm in 6th grade.

YOu may not like this but:

From my personal experience, when i had SO's that i referred to as "freinds" when introducing, its cause i didn't want other peeps to know that i was taken, just in case there for someone else i'd rather be dating that i hadn't met yet. When i look back on that, it seems mean that i would do that to people i liked, so i kinda know how you feel. You might want to talk to your chick about this.

Does your GF's friend not like you or something? Seems pretty weird if she always introduces you that way.

I did that with my GF (current wife) once.........and ONLY once!!

Gawd! I never thought I'd hear the end of THAT one.

I guess that's where we differ - I consider 'boyfriend' less childish than being referred to as her 'friend.' It makes it seem like I'm hiding something when I'm introduced as her 'friend.'

It was a third party who did the introduction.
I've always disliked the terms bf/gf although I use them for lack of better terms, but one time my ex-gf's mom introduced me as my gf's "friend" at a family event and I thought it was kinda cool.

I really don't like using the term boyfriend, for some reason. It's always "friend" with me, and people know what I mean. It's all about the intonation. Boyfriend sounds so teeny-bopper.

My girlfriend and I are really committed to each other; no worries there. Besides, it was the GRADUATE who introduced me as my girlfriend's 'friend.' ANd after she did it, she gave me a weird look, like "Sorry, I don't know what to say!" Just say "boyfriend!!"

maybe she knows something you dont....i hope your not about to get dumped

but seriously...you should have slapped her and said 'bitch.... im her man get it right dammit!'

Well, then does anyone have a better term to use than 'friend' or 'boyfriend' since so many people seem to be embarassed by either?

I think after two years, we'd talk things out before my girlfriend ran to her friends to complain. Besides, this friend wouldn't be my girlfriend's first choice of confidante.

Next time tell her "friend" to introduce you as her (your Girlfriends) human pogo stick

Significant Other sounds too dumb and PC. I don't have a problem with boyfriend and girlfriend, myself.

Perhaps you should try "Fvckbuddy".

I like that - at least there won't be any ambiguity in titles if I use it!!

Yeah, there's not really a mature, grownup sounding term. But I've got to tell you, it annoys me far less than girls who, when they talk about their boyfriends, refer to them as "the boy". As in, "Me and the boy went to a movie." It just drives me up a wall.

Thankfully, if my gfs ever actually did call me that, I wasn't around to hear it, so it's all good.

Be glad that it wasn't your gf who introduced you in that manner....
THEN you would have a real issue.

I have a group of female friends all in long term relationships and (via me) the term beloved recently got introduced. "So, how's your beloved?" *shrug and smile* May be corny, and definitely girly, but it's a little more specific than gf or bf.
