Yep, move it into the corner and drag the bottom right corner. But, OS X isn't Windows. There's absolutely no need to maximise windows in OS X.

There are needs sometimes, like if your browseing the web and you want more screen area with less scrolling...

Absolutely the most ridiculous is the 'You dont need to maximise a window"

What if his parents are old and have poor eyesight? What if its one of the millions of webpages that is fixed width and possibly larger than their resolution?

Closely followed by "Don't burn multisession disks"

Since when are you a dictator of what someone else needs to do? Asshat springs to mind!

Just like the patient that says "It hurts when I do this" and the doctor replies with "Well then don't do that".

EDIT: oh, and everything you complained about in the OP can be fixed with thrid party software, various mac tricks, and some fielsharing software. you just have to know what to do. I'm actually amazed you're having problems with filesharing. it's liek the easiest thing on a mac. user error, not mac

Hardly a "why mac sucks" thread...I don't think they DO suck.

My motivation for posting this thread was to find out what third party software or mac tricks I needed to FIX those problems...I never thought they were insurmountable.

Thanks to the OTHER posters, I now know, and am happy.

Believe me, the file sharing is NOT user error. It's probably the PC, but it's an odd problem. I've never seen a case where both machines could ping each other, but not share files. Once I connected to the mac through the PC, instead of vice-versa, it worked (maybe the PC has problems showing its shares to non-PCs?)

Mac OS X communicates with Windows volumes via SMB...so if you want to connect to a Windows machine, click Go > Connect to server... and then type "smb://" followed by the IP addy of the target machine. Any shared volumes on the Windows machine should become available.

As far as finding hidden files, you can do that from Find. Just click the first field dropdown menu, select "Other...", and then choose "Visibility," then you can choose "Visible or invisible," "Visible," or "Invisible." Also, TinkerTool will allow for this, and of course if you know what you're doing in FreeBSD, then you can always go in via the Terminal.

It really is a matter of un-learning all you have learned on Windows. It's a completely different ecosystem.

Good luck!

That's no maximize that's extending. NO need? Like sometime I scroll and accidently hit desktop and bring up window behind.. bugs me to no end and happens seemingly in every mac app I've ever used. maybe I'm clumsy - who cares? How many windows users you know that don't operate with windows apps maximized? Everyone I've ever seen in excel, word, IE etc does so making this a very useful, and basic, feature apple should have but NEVER had. I've used OS 6 -10 too.

Yeah when I have a broken foot and it hurts when I walk... my doctor would always say "You don't need to walk"

I find it kind of funny to see some of these reponses. All these things that he doesnt_need_to_do

That goes along with little stevies meglomanic dictatorship style just fine though. You don't "need" that printer so they only make drivers for PC. You don't need that scsi card. You don't need an ATI AIW.. You don't even need a floppy drive or lagacy support to program eproms w/ serial so we won't offer it..etc etc. I won't even get into all the software you don't need.

And most people don't. For those of you who do, you can buy the extra stuff.

EDIT: Of course, this ignores printers. For those, HP seems to have decent Mac OS X support, so I'm not sure what you're complaining about.

I maximize very few windows, on any of the platforms I use.

You can still walk with a broken foot, just not as well as before =) And incase you still don't get it, my doctor reply was a joke.

I'm not seeing how lack of 3rd party support for the platform is Apple's fault.

As far as software, there are usually comparable or better titles available on the Mac that will do just about anything most users will need.

As far as interface tweaks, there are plenty of shareware and freeware apps and hacks for the Mac OS X interface.

As far as "little stevie" goes (I'm assuming you're talking about Steve Jobs, and not "Little Steven" Van Zandt), whether you love him or hate him, consider him a megalomaniacal jerk or a pioneering visionary...like it or not, if it weren't for him, most GUI-based OSes would be in a very different place (maybe even still on the drawing board). When he speaks, the entire industry listens, then alters its course to match.

To just confirm what I meant by my comments... I'm not having a go at Apple or trying to make any kind of statement on the industry, I was having a go at the arrogant and downright unhelpful responses on the thread.

Instead of - 'there are a million apps out there you just suck too much to know them'

why not just tell the guy which apps?

People seem to like blistering their fingertips with the sole aim of being as large an ass as they possibly can be (and succeeding!)
