An American journalist, Peter Arnett, appeared on Iraqi television to state that (a) the original coalition war plan has failed due, I guess, to the brilliance of the Iraqi fighters, and, (b) that Iraq is treating journalists graciously. Note, please, that several journalists have been killed, all American cable and network journalists have been kicked out of Baghdad, and two Israeli and one Portuguese journalist are now being held by Saddam?s goons. One detained journalist is reported to have been beaten.
Arnett also brags that his reports about Iraqi resistance and civilian casualties in Baghdad are helping to encourage the anti-war movement in America. Arnett told the Iraqis "Our reports about civilian casualties here, about the resistance of the Iraqi forces, are going back to the United States. It helps those who oppose the war when you challenge the policy to develop their arguments." We know that Saddam's game plan is to kill the American will to fight. To destroy our will through stories about civilian causalities and American war dead. It sounds to me like Peter Arnett is actually bragging about his success in helping Saddam with his game plan.
Arnett has somewhat of a history for this type of thing. He was the one who announced that the allies had bombed a "baby milk factory" in Gulf War I. He was also the on-air reporter in a 1998 CNN report that accused American forces of using sarin gas in Laos during the Vietnam war in an attempt to kill American defectors. That report was later retracted by CNN. Following that incident Arnett found employment elsewhere.
Amazing. Peter Arnett was working for National Geographic Magazine in Iraq to do some reports for MSNBC. When NBC correspondents got the boot Arnett stepped in. It's easy to see why he hasn't been kicked out of Iraq with the rest of the network and cable reporters. After all ... he's doing a great job! For them!
