I watched some video on IGN yesterday about how he and some other guy went through looking at Peter's older games to see what features they wanted to have in Godus. It's really hard to watch any video with him talking about expected features and to take it seriously. I think the part that makes me cringe a bit is that it seems to be this solitary vision, but he wants to implement it on mobile devices as well as computers. As much as mobile devices are faster these days, I still see the prior as being a bit more constrained than the latter.

He's a visionary that has pushed PC gaming in the past and like others have mentioned his implementation in some of his games failed. I dont want to dis on the guy because he has done good but I'm afraid his time has come and gone. He is not that revelant in modern pc gaming anymore IMO. He needs a #1 hit in the worst way but I don't think he is going to succeed. I will wish him luck though.

49 Hours to go and finally looking like they're going to make it!

They've been very actively updating the Kickstarter project, so check that out if you're in doubt. They've also put out a very early playable prototype video:

I agree that Peter Molyneux has been somewhat hit and miss with his games, but honestly that's what happens when you dream and create... some things work but others don't. And when he hits it it can be brilliant and genre defining. Populous was a inspirational game for me in many senses and I believe he deserves the chance to re-imagine what I consider to be his greatest work.

Cheers,

Stretch goals just announced. Linux and OUYA support if they reach 550k, plus many goodies in between like multi-player co-op.

Wow, I watch the "concept" video, and I have to say it was rather unimpressive. I can't believe anyone actually funded this POS.

This line says it all

I imagine he's resorting to kickstarter because he doesn't have any devs that'll support is ridiculousness any longer. He may have had some good ideas in the past, but now he's just bullshitting his way through releases.

this is such utter evil.. comparing a guy who created several (still used) game types to a guy who took an old Asian movie placed it in the future and otherwise stole every idea he ever had.

peter- created the GOD game
Peter- Created the Theme game (ok.. this one is 50-50.. some evil crap came of this)
Peter- Created several games that don't fit in any style (while today you cant hardly name a game that isn't a copy)
Peter-Over promises (I can agree)

Lucas- Plagiarizer an Asian movie
Lucas-EWOKS so he could create a toy market for his movies
Lucas-Jar Jar (do i need to say more)
Lucas- Making Han Solo a anti hero.. into a good guy which basically changes the "bad guy going good for a reason" part of the original movies with one scene (shot first)

Peter hasn't made the awesomeness he did in the 90's.. but every one of his game can never be accused of not trying to make a great game.. the end results sometimes are a mixed bag.. but I never feel like I got the same game over an over with him... Of course one can argue that's what the public wants.. how many Modern war FPS games are we going to buy at $60 crack and not see they are just the same game?

I really don't think you understand why I compared Peter Molyneux to George Lucas. I've seen it mentioned numerous times that the reason why the original Star Wars trilogy (Episodes 4 through 6) are significantly better than the newer trilogy (Episodes 1 through 3) is because George Lucas didn't have his "God-like status." No one was willing to simply say, "No," to Lucas during the newer trilogy.

Now, I don't know specifics about the dynamics in Molyneux's later games, but I have PLAYED THEM. Looking at them objectively, I cannot imagine that these games could have gone through any sort of testing without someone speaking up and saying, "this doesn't work very well." Someone needed to tell Molyneux, "Removing the standard menu and replacing it with a significantly slower in-world system is a terrible idea."

I'm a software engineer, and I do a bit of work in GUIs (graphical user interface). One of the biggest things that I need to keep in mind is an overall focus. I've had people say, "can you add this feature?", and my response, "Yes, I can, but I won't. Based on this program's purpose, it simply doesn't 'fit' anywhere." You just don't simply toss something in because it sounds nifty. It needs to fit the overall design, not add unnecessary complexity, and generally not make things more difficult.

Oh, and people don't appreciate you telling them that you won't add a feature.

For someone who has played plenty of games including Black & White (briefly) but isn't aware of the behind the scenes and politics of gaming, can someone give me a summary of why Peter Molyneux is such a controversial and often hated developer?

Because he over promises and under delivers. He's all talk and no walk. At least in the last 15 years.

He made some good games when he was at Bullfrog so I think people still hope he can do it again and then get more and more bitter when he makes yet another overhyped pos game.

Its not that he's hated. He's considered a legend and is respected within the industry. Its just that he hasn't actually made any good games like he did in the past and those that he did make half sorta flopped or was 'meh' at best. Great ideas that just didnt come together in the finished product. His visions were often not accomplished. Now a days people just smile and nod in respect to him but otherwise thats it. At worse he's politely ignored but not hated.

gameplay video looks very lackluster, but the point was to demonstrate that the mocks could be implemented into something in a very short period of time (two weeks).

Overall, not bad considering it was thrown together fairly quickly.

This monster got funded. So I guess another rubbish Molyneux game is coming.

Bullfrog was magic, but clear it wasn't Peter that made is so, but a group of talented individuals.

tbh, even though I was underwhelmed by the game demo, I actually am looking at this game with raised eyebrows. it does look interesting.

Wow, this is a slightly old thread, but it's the most relevant one to this announcement.

Wow, did anyone here actually spend time/money on Curiosity? I kinda feel sorry for those who did now. I may have spent a little time (maybe 2 hours max), but never spent a dime on it, and I'm glad I didn't.

I like his creativity, but the games tend to be problematic. This sounds like the same.

Interesting idea, but does it make a better game? Not likely.

I'm fine with it as an experiment, but there is an issue with taking people's money for a project and not telling them about the project it'll actually make.

But overall, I guess it's ok for him to decide to take that approach. We'll see how it goes.

I do know I'm a bit dubious about some kickstarters where so much is named and designed by contrbutors.

Towns, characters, items, factions, rules, and more sold off to donors to make.

We might need a new name for that genre if it gorws, I suggest 'donorware'.

Anyone get this on Steam? It looks populous-ish enough that I kinda want to try it out, but... ya know...
