Petition to rebuild Arecibo

If you like there is an online petition to rebuild Arecibo.

Saw this on Spaceweather.com:

"Arecibo was unmatched in its ability to detect Earth-threatening asteroids, to time millisecond pulsars, to listen for signals from extraterrestrial intelligences, and so much more.
The petition has already collected enough signatures to require a response from the White House.
Adding more names might produce a positive response."

Actually, I don't think they should rebuild Arecibo. Arecibo was designed when we couldn't build a mirror that wasn't a parabola. Now we could build a bunch of steerable, deformable radio mirrors on flat land, and put the receiver on a nearby hilltop. The less has to be suspended by cables dozens of feet in the air, the better!

I doubt the effort would be to build it just the same, but I get your point.
I'd be all in on a 'build it better' effort.

I didn't read anything like that, and it just wants name and email address.
You can choose not to receive messages from the White House if you like.

That's not what I was thinking, I was thinking that the white house wouldn't consider non US citizens seeing as we don't pay taxes to the US (directly) or vote for them, nor is the white house our government. Doesn't the petition want your address so it only gets eligible citizens? IIRC UK gov petitions do.

Otherwise I'd be quite happy to sign the petition
