And as I pointed out then, if a subset of a group is able to co-opt a label, then the shrill man-haters of the world have taken over the word feminists. I'm all for equality. I think men and women should have the same opportunities and be paid the same for the same job. And nobody of any sex, race, or creed should have to worry about their personal safety just because some don't like their opinion. But if "gamers" are terrible people who now belong to this inescapable stereotype because a couple of trolls wrote mean things on Twitter then feminists are terrible people because of opportunists like Anita Sarkeesian and Leigh Alexander who only exist to profit off of the very social strife they themselves create.

I had a problem labeling myself a gamer far before all the gamer gate stuff. When it became a marketing term is when I started pack pedaling out of the distinction.

That's something I never understood. For someone who takes so much public pride for being an advocate for women's rights, she is quite sexist herself.

As for her Tropes vs. Women work, some of her talks are substantive and meaningful. Others are full of lazy reasoning, discriminatory attitudes, and subtle hints of vitrol. There are plenty of counter-videos that calmly, methodically, and rationally break apart most of her arguments. I can't take her seriously for these reasons.

No, it's completely untrue, but that doesn't matter because as soon as people see the name "Sarkeesian," they shut off all cognitive function and go into rage mode. It's been pointed out multiple times in this thread already that this is all based on a complete lie and there are still people acting as though it's undisputed fact. They don't want to believe otherwise.

I think you guys missed my point or I didn't make it clear enough. The label "gamer" is tainted at this point. It was requisitioned by dudes selling Halo Mountain Dew and tacos. Nothing wrong with being 30+ and playing games daily. Nothing at all. No judgement on my part, I'm not 30 quite yet but getting close and love games. I don't identify as a "gamer" because I don't identify with that goes with it these days. Its a tainted label.

Its like being called a trekkie. You may have watched all the Star Trek episodes and like the show, but immediately when you put the label of "Trekkie" on someone they are practically getting married in Captain Kirk's uniform or going on Trekkie cruises. Its a parody title. Although with "gamer", a lot of people have even dragged it through the mud.

You are a person that plays games, but probably not a modern "gamer." Hope that makes sense. Pretty much, there are a lot of associations that go with that title these days that you probably don't want to be attached to.

A fair point, but I could turn it back on you and say your definition isn't widely accepted and mine is. I'm unsure what the "national" perspective is. After this gamer gate stuff it would be interesting to see a wide scale study done on the word. Just know there are people like me that have that association with the word, so it is possible people get the wrong impression when called a gamer.

The funny thing about your opinion here is that you basically say that it's foolish to try and say that gamers adhere to a single stereotype, using your own personality/life experience as an example, and even though you consider yourself to be a gamer, you are also all these other things.
