I just had the opportunity to visit China over the last 2 weeks. For all you "authentic" chinese prophets out there, it cant get more real than that...lol

The food they serve in restaurants is mildly put "disgusting". I used to love duck and seafood till I saw a duck wide-eyed head in my dish and fishes's with nothing on them except the scales and the head. It was like 2 weeks on the Bizarre Foods show. With the unpalateable meat on offer, we decided to go vegan in the hopes of scoring some delicacies. Well it was just raw seaweed in this and that.

So next time you knock against American pseudo-chinese food, think of the billions of unfortunate people there, eating this crap all their life!!! I also found the reason why chinese folks stuff their face at all-u-can-eat buffets here all the time.

FYI. It's normal for chinese dish to serve with the head and tail of the duck/fish/goose/pig in a real chinese restaurant. It's a good omen/fortune thing. Don't knock it if you are not familiar with other culture.

I wouldn't necessarily say it's for "good fortune", not anymore anyway. It's just a more naturalist approach to food presentation, which is probably the result of the historical scarcity of food. Frankly I think it's funny that americans freak out when they see any hint that the slabs of meat in their dish came from an actual animal.

Too true. Besides, the fish cheeks are the tastiest part! I won't touch the eyes though (unlike some other people I know).

I love PF Changs. Obviously it's not authentic Chinese food, but so what? Also, expensive? I was just talking to a buddy of mine the other day about how cheap it was. We went out to grab some dinner, got 2 appetizers, 2 sides, 2 entrées, and drinks for like 72 bucks with a solid tip. Really not bad at all.

Doesn't matter if its real Chinese or fake Chinese food, as long as it tastes good.

That said, I have never heard of this place and have never tried food from there.

I'm sorry you had an unpleasant dining experience, but it's not really representative of Chinese cuisine. Unlike in the US, where pretty much food from anywhere is "average", quality of food in China varies wildly depending on where you go. You can hit up a restaurant opened by some migrant workers who just decided to open up shop even with no background in food preparation (country food sucks BTW), or you can go to somewhere with decades of reputation, or fine restaurants that are $$$.

That said though, I don't mind americanized chinese at all. It can be pretty tasty.

Yeah... all food in America, no matter where you go is "average quality" We have no high end restaurants anywhere.... not to mention local ma-and-pa shops that are fucking fantastic. ALL HAIL AUTHENTIC CHINESE FOOD!!!

I think he meant that there is more of a baseline in America that food doesn't tend to dip under.

Yeh, when freaking Arby's costs damn near $20 for a large combo each for my wife and I, $70 at a sit down restaurant with drinks and appetizers doesn't seem that bad.

Dude... you need to stop eating at amusement park restaurants. Arby's here for 2 large meals is like $14 tops. With tax.

I think they have re-worked their pricing a bit. But year ago a large sandwich combo was upwards of $8.00 a piece. Change one of the drinks out for a Jamocha shake and you were pushing $20 after the 10% sales tax we have on restaurants around here. This was just your typical run of the mill Arby's. Each region has it's own pricing. So I'm going to guess that IL region is much higher than Alamaba.

I wait for the sale deals anyway. Been liking that steakhouse sub, which in combo form (small though, which is fine with me) is $3.99 + tax.

That's exactly what I meant; there's less of a spread in quality. I made no comparison between the quality of food in the US and China, only the relative distributions of quality. Calm the frack down man. FWIW I think the average quality of food in the US is higher.

PF Chang's is garbage. Oddly, Pei-Wei, which is owned by the exact same group, is pretty good with much better prices and less totally pointless ingredients/dishes.

IMHO : Most Mexican/Chinese/American food is better when it's simple and made with quality ingredients. Trying to get too fancy is just asking for fail. Cuisine which benefits from a lot of effort and complexity are things like French, Indian, and Greek dishes. I do realize this is a gross oversimplification, and that China is a truly vast and varied country, but in general I think it holds true.

I'm thinking if a restaurant sells it's "product" in the frozen foods section at your local grocery store, it's average eats. Nothing special.

Isn't real Chinese food just a bowl of rice? Maybe a bean sprout? Why go to a restaurant for that?

Besides, if I'm going to eat authentic Chinese, it better be made with real Chinese people in it.

I don't care if it's authentic Chinese food or not. It's better on average than 100% of the local "Chinese" restaurants here, with the exception that one place here serves passable dim sum that is better. I don't live in SF or NYC so PF Chang wins by default. Every meal I've had at "Chinese" restaurants in SF and NYC have been better, no question about that.
