I've lived most of my life in the U.S. I've tried many different Chinese restaurants across the states. I've only eaten at PF Chang's maybe twice, but wasn't really impressed by it.
I've had "real" Chinese food in Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, etc. Some of it was ordered by a tour company, some by a friend (who's a Beijing native), some by my dad (who was born in China but has spent the last 50 years in the U.S.)
"Real" Chinese food is very different from Americanized Chinese food. I love Panda Express Orange Chicken, but it does not compare to the "real" stuff. Even to my American palate, real Chinese food tastes better. Although, as already mentioned by a previous poster, food quality really does depend on where you go, moreso than in the U.S.
Dishes ordered by my dad in Xian tasted just like dishes from Chicago's Chinatown...but it was very different from the stuff ordered by my Beijing friend.
My conclusion: Americans eat salt and fat. If I could get the same veggie dishes here that I ate in China, I'd be a heckuva lot thinner and healthier. Chinese actually know how to make veggies taste good!
