Phantom PCI card

Starting a couple of weeks ago, my computer stated detecting a PCI card on startup. The thing is, I have not added any hardware to my motherboard since I built the machine last November. The only PCI card I have installed is my sound card, and I haven't taken messed with it since I installed it. I did add a scanner about a month ago, but that is through one of the existing USB ports.

It is not causing any real problems as far as I can tell because I always cancel the plug and play configuration when it comes up duing startup. Any help would be appreciated.

I am running Windows 98SE. ECS K7S5A MB.

Do you have the onboard sound disabled at all seeing as you have a stand alone sound card ?

What does it identify the card as?...or does it just say "Unknown Device" or "PCI Card" or something?

It just says "PCI Card".

If yout take out your sound card does it still come up?

And you don't have a PCI modem correct?

I'll try removing the sound card this evening when I get home and see what happens. I do not have a PCI modem.

I disconnected the sound card and started the computer. I get the same result "PCI Card Found". I have no PCI devices installed.

The only thing I can think is that it is the onboard sound....some onboard sounds need to be disabled at 2 points in the bios....You could try doing a bios flash.

I don't think Windows 98SE has the option to search windowsupdate.com for drivers when it's finding new hardware, you could try going there to see if it has any drivers for this unknown device.

Other than that, I am just not sure...I have never encountered this issue with the K7S5A systems I have built. I would let it install it as Unknown device and then click in the "Disable in this hardware profile" box on it's properties to shut it up if you cannot solve.

Thanks, man. It is one of those frustrating things that just seem to happen. I have been happy with my K7S5A. This is the first problem I have had with it, if it is indeed a problem with the motherboard.

I didn't see anywhere you posted that you reinstall the OS on it. So here is something I have ran into.

I had a Soyo SY7VCA motherboard and I was not thinking and installed the VIA 4-in-1 drivers. Well after a restart it kept saying that it found a new IDE controler and needed the driver for it. I never found the driver and could not get it to go away. Once I reformated and reinstalled it was fine. It looks like maby windows thinks your sound card needs some other file or is a diffrent type of card than it is. Can you force it to use the correct drivers?

I have a similar problem with an Epox 8KTA3 - I disabled the onboard sound, but it still detects it. I just let it find it, and then I disabled it in the Hardware Profile. Seems ok now. No idea why it does that.

I have tried to get it to accept my soundcard drivers, but nothing seems to be what it is looking for. I did what The Corm suggested and let it load without a driver and disabled it. That has taken care of the problem for now.

I have not thought about re-installing Windows, but I have been thinking about upgrading to XP from 98SE, so maybe that would take care of the issue in a permanent way.

You could try doing a bios flash....

That should do it. Get the BIOS dated 7/24 I believe. But, if you want to upgrade to XP or Win2K, this version of the BIOS can cause floppy write corruption...
