Why let the cat out of the bag, and lay all your cards on the table at once? Maybe they'll wait to see what kind of FUD the Intel marketing machine will respond with.

i dunno, intel never demo'ed any ridiculous suicide overclocks at an official gathering. that kind of garbage is definitive FUD.

this demo stinks of desperation IMO.

Bullshit. Intel had Fugger do some "world record overclocks" at the last official yearly intel gathering. I don't know what voltage, but I seem to recall it was on phase, and probably at 5Ghz.

that was on a penryn which has been around for a long time. big difference between doing this kind of stunt on a EOL product and something that isn't even out yet.

Well, how about we go back to the 90's when Intel was publically showing PII's clocked to 450Mhz a year before they were available?

Why go back so far? Let's just review Intel IDF 2002:

Today, during Louis Burns' keynote Intel showed off a 4GHz Pentium 4

Guys, do you think we could be more off topic ?? I don't want to lock this, so lets get back on topic.....

I can't think of a more on-topic discussion than that of the relevance of 6GHz LN2 demo's. We are discussing the point of doing it as well as the business ethos that surrounds the management decisions to do them.

Naturally in a 2-man business segment we are drawing from examples of past actions to discuss the merits of the current activities.

If this isn't on topic then I'll be the first to admit I'm a little baffled as to what exactly we should be talking about.

6GHz Phenom 2. It was already mentioned in the first post. Are we all just supposed to post a repeat of the OP? I suppose we could restrict all of our posts to the "w00t! +1 " variety. Then it would be painfully on-topic and painfully pointless to read the thread.

Guidance appreciated, thanks in advance.

Please guys lets not antagonize anyone. Things get ugly quick when a forum goes down that path. We don't know the background information that Mark was operating on when he posted, which is why I asked for guidance/clarification as to what was getting off-topic in the thread. Remember we like Mark, he's a great mod.

We seem to be on topic at the minute discussing the stability of Phenom II at 6GHz...

*oh free t-shirts* yes please!

Others will find value in a 6GHz demo, I find it interesting but not value-add insofar as answering any questions I have about clockspeeds and power-consumption of Phenom II.

Personally I'd find it infinitely more value-add (to my knowledge database) if AMD held a demo where they showed us some max overclocks which are 12hr prime95 small FFT stable.

Yeah sure the clocks are going to be a lot lower, and not nearly as sexy, probably around 3.8-4GHz. But at least we'd all know something that materially impacted our decision matrix on future purchases.

When was the last time knowing the clockspeed of a CPU under LN2 and very light CPU load actually factored into your (or anyone's) purchasing decision. Zero value-add, IMO.

I understand why AMD did the demo, I don't knock them for it nor do I wish to come across as diminishing the achievement for the design engineers and process engineers involved in making an architecture and product capable of these clockspeeds.

I just need AMD to do one more additional demo where they really show the 24/7 stable stuff is all, then I learn something I need to know.
