I see there are a lot of reviews on Newegg about the CPU but I am curious if anyone on AT is running one? I know what all the review sites have stated about the CPU, but their testing isn't indicative of real world use in the slightest.

Thoughts?

I bet there are, but they ain't telling And I think most people here overclock, or get encouraged to overclock, and thus go with intels q6600 instead.

Its a waste of money. The Q6600@3.5 will blow it away, and that easy to do.

I only know one person who picked one up and that was because he got a great deal on it and his MB he already had was compatible. All OC attempts over 2.6 were futile even with a very good cooling setup.

Why buy a chip that BARELY OCs to the level of a stock Q6600? Seems like a bad choice to me...

This is a "quad core for the masses" that may be a big hit in WalMart when buying a budget quadcore, but nothing else...

See, this is what I thought I would get - people who don't actually own the CPU or have direct experience with it.

If there people out there running this CPU, lets here from you on how things are day in and day out.

LOL, maybe you just answered your own question? No one IS running one...

If you're an average user/gamer, and don't overclock, I wouldn't recommend a Phenom. Not when you can buy a 2.6-2.8 Ghz X2 for $99, and an X2 6400 (which is faster than Phenoms in games) for $159: link to said processors

Now, if you honestly need a quad-core, and don't care that it won't be as fast in neearly all games as an X2 6400, I highly doubt you'd be disappointed with either a Phenom 9500 (the one I'd buy, if I were going to buy a Phenom) or the Phenom 9600 BE, unless you are wanting to use them for virtualization. Since I don't own a Phenom, this post also serves as a bump, so maybe the one guy who posts here pretty regularly that has a newly built Phenom system can see it.

I really don't see any reason for anyone on this planet to buy a Phenom. It's totally overpriced, defective and the performance is low. I once thought that it could be a good deal, owning an AM2 motherboard, but after seeing that there are quite a few people with problems, I've changed my mind. If the TLB thing was missing the Phenom could have been, in some cases, a good buy, but right now I don't understand why is AMD even trying to sell them.

Nope, don't know anyone who bought this yet. All my friends and relatives I recommended C2Ds/C2Qs to. I think only safe for you to get the upcoming B3 with the corrected TLB problem plus other unadvertised problems corrected. See how that goes. But even then it is gonna be tough, intel is planning to replace Q6600 with Q9300 Yorks at same price point. So the B3s will have to come against Yorks esp considering they having trouble with Q6600s, this ain't gonna be pretty.

I know that a few ppl here are running Phenoms, but like 98% of the quad ppl are running C2Q systems.

The thing is with Phenoms is that you have to be pretty darned hard-pressed financially to badly need a quad-core that is $20-$40 cheaper then the next available thing (Q6600)...and yet you need to be doing something with your computer that actually having a quad-core makes the difference versus having an X2 or C2D.

How few people fall into that category? An X2 or C2D is too slow for me, but I can't justify spending another $40 to buy the Intel quad...

Intel quad is lower power consumption that the Phenom too. There are just so few reasons to argue for not getting lower-power higher-performing quad system with a Q6600 by spending an extra fifty bucks.

If you do find yourself making purchasing decisions based on skimming $50 off the budget then your time is likely not such a precious commodity that having a cheaper dual-core system is out of the question anyways.

Who's running one, besides batmang? And speaking of batmang, here's his Phenom build thread.

There is a couple different threads... You are a Diamond member, I'm sure you are capable of looking it up.

I believe this forum might not be a great place for the average computer user seeking advice. My own reluctance to spend entire paychecks on upgrades, as an experienced user, even makes me appear to be a standard user here. Enthusiasts are a dying breed anyway. Gone are the days of spending thousands for a fully functioning computer.

I would recommend staying away from Phenom until April and the B3 stepping, even if the TLB bug itself is way overstated. Otherwise, AMD has just as much a viable computing platform, based on your own individual needs and priorities. I expect AMD to become more cost competitive in the continuing months.

You may be right, but my argument would be that folks who feel that way nee to find themselves posting more in the "General Hardware" forum than say the "CPU and Overclocking" forum...

I could make the argument, and be correct in my assertions, that the Motherboard forum is the worst place for the average user to recieve advice on purchasing video cards...

I have one, and I love it. But you have to accept it and appreciate it for what it is. Its not a overclocking beast like the Q6600 so don't go thinking its going to perform liked a overclocked Q6600, its not and will NEVER even get close. I know cause I've tried, and its not even worth trying. I love my Spider platform rig and I would'nt change it even after knowing what it is and is not capable of. If you want a full Spider rig it will be more expensive than going with a Intel build so keep that in mind.

If your just upgrading your AM2 setup then the Phenom is a good choice along with the 5000+ Brisbane. But, if your building up a new rig entirely, I would highly recommend doing your research and then decide if the Phenom is for you. My rig plays all the games I throw at it perfectly fine, I scored 10500+ on 3DMark06, it runs very cool and quiet, its more than enough power for my needs. I love it.

i was running one for all of 4 hours. i had a system built with the 2.2 phenom and left the machine sitting at the OS install screen waiting for me to press enter. i came back after a few hours and there was a bunch of debug code on the screen referencing cpu addresses. power cycled it and it never came back again. tried everything, even putting the phenom in another machine, wouldn't POST. i put an x2 4200 in there and it POST'd again. so yeah... a great phenom experience...
