Hey yall, is the phenom 940 a INSANE upgrade over a 2mb AMD dual core at atleast 3ghz?

i really dont feel like im getting the most out of my 8800GT and this CPU "on paper" looks like it destroys my current one....
im aware this chip would most likely run "unrecognized" as i have no interest in upgrading my mobo till i upgrade my vid card...(when 4890 goes down or maybe even the latest card next year)

thanks for the help

I don't know that it'd be "INSANE" in everything you do, but I would think you would get noticable gains in a lot of areas.

Yeah, I just upgraded to a x3 720 with ddr3 a couple days ago. I went from a x2 5000 BE @3.0 ghz. to the Phenom II.
I can honestly say it is a pretty big bump in speed. Even simple tasks like browsing the web is much snappier. I have yet to
see how much it pushes my ati 4850, though. Ill do some gaming this weekend to see.

Well worth the $350 I spend on the MB, CPU, and Ram.

Well it does look like your mobo supports Phenom II AM2+ processors, so sure why not upgrade. Or else like you said wait for the 4890 and then pick from your options then.

if you play a lot of game, why not dump the cash into a new 4870 or something similar? that should give you a lot better game performance than getting a quad. of couse if you do other things that uses multicore a quad would help.

I upgraded from x2 5600+ (looks like you have the same in ur sig) to PII 720, OC'ed to 3.4ghz, and I can definitely see the improvement in overall system performance/responsiveness even tho it's only 3 core.

fijianalky86 > according to me it's a bad upgrading you will do. The price/perf-upward rate would be poor...

Word of warning: If you're still running XP, CNQ issues are not resolved then! You'll get worse single thread performance than what you have now

thanks for all the replies...im pretty sure the only thing i do that would really benefit from a quad is CRYSIS...
so a 4870 eh? ....the sapphire 1gb on newegg looks like a good deal...but can my CPU really power things? i know its gonna be a slight bottleneck but i dont wanna see 120FPS and then see very low drops in frames...
i've been playing UT3 since that free weekend on steam and its pretty CPU dependent from what i've seen..
still not so sure....i play mostly COD4,CS:S,UT3 ....all those can use a stronger CPU i guess..(CS:S is obviously overkill)
what do you think? :|

Well the good news is you can't see a difference between 120FPS and 80FPS with your monitor anyway.

The way I see it, the thing with your rig is that while the A64's are no speed demons by any means these days, they are still *capable* as I'm sure you game 'ok' on your rig.

At the same time, the 8800GT is not a bad GPU by any means, but it's certainly not going to max games out at your resolution either.

You're in an spot where you're likely to see gains from an upgrade of either component in different areas/games. A better upgrade path for you might be to skip both the 4870 and PhII 940 and look at upgrading to a PhII 720 (it'll provide 99% of the performance clock for clock in almost every game I would think compared to the 940... I'm sure someone will dig up a bench to prove me wrong though. ) and then look into a logical GPU upgrade with the money you save plus the money you get for selling your old components, and maybe a little more saving. The 4890 is about to be released, so is the GTX275. Both are expected in April. I wouldn't be suprised if GTX260 and 4870 prices drop a few bucks more... already you can find them both for very near $150 if you look around and are patient. I bet by April $150 for these parts will be more common.

I just wouldn't upgrade to a GTS250 or 4850 type of card with your PhII 720 (if you go that route), they'd both be faster, but in my opinion they wouldn't be so much faster that I'd spend money on them over an 8800GT. That's why I'm suggesting a PhII 720 now (and save a few bucks over the 940) and then do a proper upgrade in the GPU area. Just my $.02

thanks for the help yall, especially spyder

i'll put my 8800GT and CPU up on craigslist for a quick local sale when the 4890 comes out and make the purchase along with your recommended 720

Only ATi card i've ever owned was the x1950 pro and it was enough of an experience to steer a person away forever!
I'm confident this time around it's gonna be alot different
