Distributors in Europe and North America will begin shipping both OEM and retail boxes of the Phenom II 920 and Phenom II 940 starting December 18th (Europe), according to one distributor, and December 20th (North America).

The Phenom II X4 920 SKU will sell at about $US235 to retailers, while the overclocking whiz-kid, the Phenom II X4 940 will ship at $US275. At least one distributor says December 20th is the ETA for the shipment.

As far as we can tell, pricing in Europe will be around ?220 for the 920 but will become available from the 18th. We couldn?t get a pricing on the 940, though, but we?d expect it to be in the ?250-265 range. Add tax to these numbers, if you will.

This puts the Phenom II X4 940 just under the Core 2 Quad 9550, while the Phenom II X4 920 will undercut the Q9400. We expect that Intel will slash prices just before Christmas.

So those of you who wrote letters to Saint Nick asking for Phenom II, might get your wishes after all.

We couldn?t get hold of AMD for a comment, and we're still chatting to local Aussie disties to see if the story's the same here? The current NDA for Phenom II reviews is January 9, so we've got to wonder how that's going to hold up...

Edited to add: We've spoken with our local AMD man, Garrath Johnson - Technical Manager - and he informed us that the local release will follow the same pattern as elsewhere.

"This [news] relates to distributor stock. We are working very hard to ensure that Phenom II is widely available at launch on the 8th of January," he told us when we passed on the news from OS. "This, along with motherboard/BIOS availability, will mean that people wanting to buy are not disappointed."

Xmas just might be coming early.

Is this actually competitive though???? For about $50 more you could get a Core I7. Does the phenom II compete with the Core I7, or is it a better match against a Core 2 series?

As far as I understand it is. I7 requires DDR3. Expensive. Requires new motherboard too. Very expensive as well.

If these will consistently clock to 3.8Ghz on air, then this will be a very fun Christmas present. I hope they do. I wonder why AMD isn't letting anybody review them in time to buy for Christmas.

What he said....If I can get an AM2+ motherboard for $100 and a 940 for $275, that will be my next box.

Edit: That $100 motherboard has to be a good one.

I haven't been keeping up with CPU news. What's the general outlook on this one? Performance ± 10% compared to Yorkfield at the same clock, depending on the benchmark?

From what I've read around, they are just competitive with the 45nm quads from Intel. Generally slower for most tasks. I'll wait for retail samples to get into reviews though.

This is very good news for AMD.

At least they are competitive again rather than left completely in the dust and shoved deep into the value sector where they have to price slash to compete.

It will be very interesting to compare price / performance of i7 and Core 2 vs Phenom II.

Here's the board i was going to get with my Phenom II.

GIGABYTE GA-MA770-DS3P AM2+/AM2 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

It has the newer SB700 south bridge and is all solid capacitor's. It's 140Watt processor compatible and Phenom II 45nm as well.

Great bargain for $79 to pair up with a new Phenom II.

Are you thinking of the sb750? That's the one with ACC and better OCing.

No, this is the new 2.0 revision of the 770 chipset board. The older model has the SB600 southbridge, this new revision has the SB700 southbridge for $1 more.

But the SB750 is the newest and best southbridge. AFAIK boards that use it are 780g, 790gx, and maybe one 790fx.

That doesn't mean anything. Most people would admit that they have no brand loyalty. Most of the people who have current Intel rigs did at one time use an AMD CPU because it was the better option at the time. A64 vs P4 for example.

Before my current system, I used an AMD X2 4200+, socket 939.

If the Phenom IIs are priced well, perform well, and don't consume a ton of power (compared to i7), I'll be grabbing one in the coming months.

To me, it would depend on performance. When I upgrade next year, I'm going to build from scratch. I am going to buy whichever one is the best performer.

The way I think about it is like this. It doesn't matter if the Phenom II can clock to 4Ghz on Air, Intel CPUs can too. It has to be faster than Intel CPUs for me to consider it. That's all there is too it. I say this because when you're building a new system and already planning to spend about $1000 on the system or more, a few dollars more isn't a big deal when you want the fastest currently available. Power consumption doesn't mean a thing to me. It's such a small amount that you'd never see it on your electric bill, and if you're in a situation where a few pennies means a lot...I think you should stop buying computer hardware. My opinion.

You have to update your count.

This is great news. I have a 4850e rockin in my 780g board but a Phenom II upgrade would be overkill.

I too have an AMD. I would not mind upgrading to a 3GHz Phenom II, especially if it OCs well. But that's in the future. For now I'm fine with my current Phenom.

Still using one. I can't afford to upgrade every year.
This year is an upgrade year.

Exactly,up to this point the actual reality is would Phenom II be comparable with yorkfield clock to clock?Save your comparison with i7,cause at this point most of us know that clock for clock with i7's hyperthreading(8 Threads) Phenom II will stand no chance,so what is left is price competiveness for its improvements from Phenom, but as a consumer I'll be more careful since AMD had their history unlike Intel's reliability,so yea unless AMD truly beats Intel one day,I wouldnt bother with AMD,given Intel still has the crown for its performance, but that is just my personal choice,if you have a brand loyalty to AMD,nothing would stop you right?

If Intel slashes prices with the release of Phenom II, then there's likely a C2Q in my future.

The best thing about Phenom II is that all of those people with 780 series motherboards can simply update their bios and pop in a very powerful upgrade!
