Interesting. This will be good for me because I can either get me a nice quad when Intel slashes their prices to compete. Or maybe ill just get a nice AM2+ board and a Phenom II if it beats out the C2Qs.

Well, if the PII isn't really a competitor(remember we don't have actual retail samples to review on any tech site, just some forum posts with unvalidated screenshots of a cpu-z window) then Intel could play it like Nvidia did with Video cards for the past year prior to the 4870 release. Although I don't believe that would be the case because Intel hasn't really been gouging on their current CPU lineup. I think $320 for a Q9550 is a very fair price. You may disagree with me and that's fine, we all have different price levels we want to see.

I agree that their price structure is fine. What Intel seems to be doing is using this time of performance dominance to increase their yield by releasing CPU's at much lower clocks than they could. They could probably sell 3.6 or even 3.8 GHz dual core processors but they don't because they don't have to to compete. They could probably also sell higher binned quads (3.4 GHz or 3.5 GHz), but again they don't need to to compete with performance.

What AMD releasing CPU's that compete with or better current Intel CPU's will do is force Intel to release higher binned CPU's for the same cost. We can be reasonably sure that they can do this, since the processors are known to overclock so well at stock voltages.

Yep absolutely, in fact they already do sell 3.4GHz quad Xeon because they need the performance in dual-socket mobo's to compete against the aggregate performance of a 4S opteron box.

http://processorfinder.intel.c...tails.aspx?sSpec=SLBBD

There is no 4S phenom desktop market, so no need to make 1S desktop LGA775 yorkfield CPU's go to 3.4GHz.

This would make a very nice upgrade for my HTPC, which uses a Gigabyte 780G-based motherboard.

I was pretty much just guessing that they would cut prices lol. I dunno if it will actually happen. I guess it depends on how well the AMD chips are. Either way I wanted to get into a quad. I may just get a q6600 g0 for now since they are cheap.

Release in 5 days?!?! Where are the reviews? Are we supposed to buy it on good faith that AMD isn't trying to sell enthusiasts another steaming pile?

I will be buying and building a completely new system likely between now and the end of January, my money is going towards a Q9550 as of now - prove me wrong anand or others!

I bet it won't be out before christmas. That seems to be wishful thinking unless for some reason you can buy it before there are reviews.

Don't read too much into these early rumors/leaks regarding PhII release dates. Release does not mean availability, nor does it mean NDA expires for reviewers.

Remember there was about a 2 week window for i7 over which is was supposed to release (as early as Nov 3, then later as late as Nov 27).

The only "solid" date anyone can really throw a dart at is Jan 8th, start of CES.

Whether you buy a Q9550 system or an equivalent costing PhII system I doubt you will be disappointed with the performance.

If you game then your focus really needs to be on your GPU approach (SLI/xfire/single-card, etc).

If you do things that really take advantage of quadcore then you should be entertaining the idea of an i7 920.

In all cases, $700 buys a hell of a lot of computer in Q1'09.

I would buy an i7 920 tomorrow, what I don't entertain is the thought of dropping $500 on a mobo/ram combo.

That's because you are talking about buying it tomorrow (or rather today) versus waiting till Feb after the AM3 Phenom II chips are out.

I wouldn't recommend buying current first-rev mobo's or first retail stepping i7's to anyone. Wait for the second round of these products if you want to avoid being a "pay-to-play" beta-tester.

When does the NDA lift? If they are going to be available before christmas I would think it would be soon.

Now is the 920 and 940 the only ones being released on December 20th/January 8th or will the new Phenom X3s and X2s be out at the same time?

besides the prices currently, there's nothing bad about the current x58 mobos and i7 CPUs. Maybe you'll get better overclocking later, but some people aren't going to wait around forever ya know.
