Any word on when we will be able to purchase this CPU?

I would hate to have to pull the trigger on the AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition if the 555 is dropping soon...

They have been available in Europe for a while. I also believe Provantage had a batch and is anticipating more in the next week. Or you could purchase a Phenom II X2 550 C3 revision. The only difference is the multiplier and a 100MHz difference.

Are there going to be any c3 550's? The 550 is a eol model while the 555 is the replacement model. I have yet to hear of anyone getting the c3 on a 550???

Just checked Provantage. They are showing it as a special item order and priced way over MSR. No thanks. I might just buy an Athlon II X2 240 Regor in the interim.

I really hate these delayed launches.

Until you can get the price you want for the cpu you want, depending on what mobo you have just get one of those $3x-$40 Sempron 140's and oc it and try unlocking it until you can find the cpu you want at the price you want.

I have a test setup with a 140 Sempron I bought new for $28 and it runs great at 3.5ghz and unlocks perfectly fine to a Athlon II 4400e @ 3.5ghz. Thats some real bang for very little money. Obviously not all will unlock but high mhz oc should be attainable by most...

Thanks formulav8! After doing a little research on that Sempron, that looks like the ticket....particularly when I pair it up with a cheap Asus 710 southbridge on a combo deal at the egg, the CPU is costing $22.00.

Still seems like the AMD Athlon X3 435 for $30 less is a better value ( and I know less cache ) but I just don't see that great of performance difference:

So did BLT, before today the page said 610 units arriving ETA 2-9-10 but the page refreshed today and the dates changed to 2-24-10 and 3-10-10. It wouldn't surprise me to see those dates slip again

So I am going to pull the trigger on the Athlon X3 435. I just don't see that much performance difference between the 435, Phenom X2 550, and Athlon X4 620. If I can unlock the 4th core and apply a little OC it should be fine.

Regardless, it will be good upgrade from a very old C2DE4500

Looks like Provantage sold a few PII X2 555 too early and the US release date has been delayed further. Here are a few European benches of the PII X2 555 on Xtremesystems. Looks like a nice chip.

The PII X2 550 C3 is no longer in stock at Provantage and the shipping price for special orders is high. Otherwise shipping was $4.95. The next cheapest place is Buy.com at $96 shipped.

My 550 BE at newegg was 90.99 and free shipping(still is). But it didn;t unlock.

I should have gotten the 720 BE for $105 !

my buddy just bought an 550be from newegg last week and it unlocked to a quad and is stable @ 3625Mhz presently on stock cooler. vcore @ 1.45. on a gigabyte us2h mb. (i'll get the pack date and post later)

do you have another mb to try it on?

(most of the recent chips seem to unlock from what i've seen)

Yup I see it. Its not BE, but according to Anandtech's review there IS a BE version.

Is this the BE?

Yeah I'm confused if its the Black Edition. The SKU on the site is listed as: HDZ555WFGMBOX.

The BE SKU written on the processor from Anand's review is: HDZ555WFK2DGM

Got the Phenom II 550 BE along with the board in my sig from Tigerdirect for $170 -15% Bing cashback. I unlocked both cores. Its been a week now, tested with prime 95 and stable. Required no vcore change.

Good to hear! But we're talking about the 555 not the 550.
