Surprized this chip hasn't been talked about here yet. Seems AMD is striking gold with 45nm compared to the disaster they had with 65nm. This should compete with the Q9650. Still not reaching Nehalem's performance levels but at least they are showing signs of catching up even if very late. Something to hold them until Bulldozer arrives in 2011, though Lynnfield this fall will keep the upper hand firmly in Intel's court.

Wonder how these will OC? 4.5 GHz? Then if they reach 4.0 GHz how far will those go? They also talk about a new 785 chipset which will hopefully also be impressive.

I would love for AMD to be fully competitive again but I can't help but think that these higher clocks are just eating OC headroom. Hopefully I'm wrong.

The interest on these forums as it relates to AMD cpus quickly went from the BE quads to the unlocking fanfare of the X3's.

Why would folks here talk up yet another top-dollar quad-core SKU?

My interest in it I guess is the fact that it suggests that AMD's yields are improving and overall they are catching up to Intel finally. I hope these succeses help keep AMD afloat, bring Bulldozer here faster, and how this is ultimately important to keep the market competitive and prices down.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm with you, was just trying to add some perspective in answering your question.

I thought the same thing about Intel's 45nm process with the i7 975's coming out, but around here the vast majority of the i7 threads will be relating to OC'ing the i7 920's.

Seems like their 45nm process is really healthy. If they can release a quad processor running @ 3.4GHz this early, I'd say they have a chance to get a 3.6 maybe even a 3.8GHz CPU before their 32nm parts roll out.

They need the higher clocks this round because Intel has the IPC advantage at this time.

I highly doubt the overclock potential will be any better, just because the stock clock speed is raised doesn't mean the max overclock increases as well. I have a feeling Phenom II is gonna end up like the Athlon X2 was when trying to compete, shipping with ridiculous power consumption and almost no headroom if any to overclock. If your confused on what I'm referring to, just think back to the Athlon X2 6400.

I'd like to see the improvements in their 45nm process lead to some even lower tdp CPUs. Supposedly, 45w Athlon IIs are coming, but how about a 45w Phenom II? Or even a 45w Phenom II X4???

100mhz more is barely a margin. Is this going to be Deneb or a new core? If its just an overclocked Deneb then we're not talking about much here.

3.4 on stock volts though is great; don't have to worry about temps at all.

All of the current Denebs can hit at least 3.6 on stock volts, the 955 can generally hit 3.8 on stock.

3.6 at stock was doable on both the 955s I tried. 3.8 on the other hand was not possible. The chip I kept does 3.8 at 1.45, the one I sold didnt ever get stable on x64 at 3.8.

lol so what do u think will overclock better?

AMD's 965? or my Intel i7 965?

Anyone who gets it, im up for a fair game of race.

Ummmm i dont think you want to go up against my W3570 W3580 or my 975 tho.

I wish AMD would make up there own names.

coming out? u mean already out?

And did u miss all my threads?? IDC *tisk tisk tisk*

And lets not forget intels 2 other unlocked i7 D0's

W3570 W3580 both which i have @ 4.4ghz HT ON might i add /w 1.388 vcore. :X

which is why i said u dont want to go against those 2 including my 975. :X

I'll match vcore with the AMD 965 on my i7 965 and see who tops out first.

Wow this is really awesome for us non overclockers as well as the expert overclockers. I would love to just have a 4ghz Phenom II.

Will this have any immediate effects on either the price of the 955 black or i7 920 ?

I keep seeing people purchasing the i7 920 from anywhere to 129.99-199.99 and I just can't seem to pull the trigger knowing I would be paying outrageously higher, since I neither live in the vascinity of a Micro center nor do I work at retail store ...

Thx

You think an it 920 is going to bet much cheaper than that?

There isnt much AMD can do to affect the price of i7.

I am just going to assume you have problems fully expressing yourself in English.

So let me break it down in a way you might be able to understand :

Me pay 279.99. Me no likey pay so much. Me not rich. Deal for $129 and $199 no worky for me. Wish me could. Make me sad.

No. Legit reviews had a TWKR CPU not a 965. http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1009/1/

oops

posted in the wrong thread, you're are right, i was talking about the TWKR

on the topic, i think this is just a 955 with a 200 mhz clock increase, nothing special. It won't overclock any better IMO.

shure, a matching voltage competition so that each get their full potential, why not

So blast at least 1.45v-1.5v through that AMD since that's what these cpu's can take to get their full potential, and since you want to keep things level, do it on your Intel too, as that would only be fair.

I'm curious what speed an i7 gets at 1.5v
