I am confused if you really don't understand why he was arrested. He wasn't granted amnesty for his crimes when he entered the US. He was picked up because Germany issued a warrant for him the day before and notified the US, who then picked him up for extradition.

my question is why the big push now to put him on trial? the guy didnt flee like the top Nazis did, he has not been hiding, he didnt change his name, our government knew who and what he did in the war and where he lived in the states.

Our government isn't pushing for him to be on trial. They even said due to his position, he wasn't directly involved. Germany, on the other hand, is saying he was involved and are going to try him. All we did was pick him up and hold him until Germany comes to get him.

Germany wants him for the crimes. We send him because of that.

Yep, if Germany and the US have an extradition treaty, and if Germany has decided to issue a valid warrant for the guy, we're obligated to extradite him. Shrug.

And to add, if this guy was a Nazi and is guilty of war crimes... Fuck him. As I see it, he got 64 lucky years out of the deal.

From the complaint released by the U.S. Attorney in Philadelphia on Wednesday:
There is probable cause to find that Breyer, as a Waffen-SS Death's Head Guard Battalion armed guard … was complicit in, aided and abetted, and agreed to use his work efforts for the quick and smooth implementation of the systematic murder of hundreds of thousands of European Jews, transported between May 1944 and October 1944 in 158 trainloads to Auschwitz…

During the Nuremberg Trials, the Waffen-SS was declared a criminal organisation...

An 89-year-old man has been detained without bail on a German arrest warrant that charges him with the murder of at least 216,000 men, women and children. The hearing follows an investigation by prosecutors in Bavaria.

The ultimate decision about whether Breyer can be extradited to Germany rests with US Secretary of State John Kerry.

Don't get conscripted into the losing sides army. Simple. You think in some wacky bizzaro version of history where the Japanese actually won the war that they would have tried and hanged Trumen for war crimes for using the bomb? Pretty sure they would have. Instead he's a hero.

Do I stand alone in protest?

This man has lived another life for 70 years. Clearly peaceful enough not to draw attention. He likely has friends and family who you wish to see suffer. I condemn this action against him. All you're doing is digging up old wounds that should be laid to rest.

He is not a threat to society, he is probably frail and soon to pass from this world. Must there be venom, and hatred in your hearts? You claim to do this in opposition to 70-year old war crimes, but your actions honor such evil by continuing the pain unto this day.

There are better, more meaningful ways to guard against such horrible acts. None of them involve harming his family now. Let the old man rest. Let the war rest. It's over.

How can the German government prosecute him for following order of the German government?

Something about that seems inherently unjust.

I thought about this and no you don't stand alone. the guy was only 17 when he joined and by all accounts did not kill anybody. If he a criminal why has Germany waited for nearly 70 years to issue a arrest warrant?

What if a guy is 15, joins a group, doesn't kill anyone, 10 years ago, now is married and runs a tea shop

That's an issue for the German courts to decide.

Funny though that some of the same people who are defending him because of his youth when he joined have a decided lack of sympathy for young gang members here aka "thugs".

So if President Obama orders some black teens to deal drugs, and one of them shoots and kills a guy, and then hides out at one of his friends house would anyone consider it just to arrest the friend 70 years later for being complicit in the murder?

So, can't deal with women, issues with gays and now defending Nazis. Dude, you are soooo cool...
