i see all the good deals for IDE burners already posted
... but (1) it is rare to find one for SATA ... (2) with retail burning SW [not a trial] (3) that works in Vista ... (4) that will also work in either a B or W case .. and (5) no G-D rebates.

=========

*Review* of the Philips drive

it is a decent Burner ... the reviews mention *loud* ... not - it is more noticeable than my IDE burner but fits in nicely with my 2900xt
--So far, i got it to install and play nicely with my other HW ... copies as advertised - fast, not picky.

AND Nero7 is simply the "lite" version - the "essentials" ... Only *Part* of it is a 30-day trial --> DVD copying and some stuff i use other programs for; the 'basics' last as long as you have your burner.

Still available

8/10

[-2 for being a little obtrusive audibly when it copies and for the fact it *would* look better in a black case ]

I think, since the bezel itself is still black, it would look better with black cases... Just my opinion

actually it looks pretty good with a beige case
--it replaces my TDK CD-ReWriter with a blue bezel

It comes with "Vista Ready" Nero7 but i think it needs an update first ... and there are *no cables*

still available

isn't the software a trial version? I installed it and says it's a trial version

there is nothing on Newegg's site that indicates it is a trial and nothing on the outside of the box that says it is anything other than "Nero7 Essentials"

When does it say the trial will expire?

i noticed that *only one* of the consumer reviews called it a trial ... all the others mentioned it was a stripped-down version of Nero7.

This is tempting but I have had nothing but issues everytime I use SATA optical drives. True, I have not tried them in over a year so I guess it could have gotten better. I still do builds using IDE for the optical and save the SATA for the HDD's...

Either way this is tempting since I need one more optical drive for my new build... I could give SATA optical another chance.

I think the drives are a lot better then they use to be. I have an Asus SATA dvd burner and it's been good to me.

Nero 7 Essentials is not trial software but it is the "lite" version of Nero 7. Given how bloated Nero 7 is, depending on your burning needs Nero 7 may be more than enough. I basically burn data backups to DVD and the occassional music CD and Nero 7 Essentials is more than enough for those needs.

I think Nero always installs as a trial version, and becomes a full version after you enter the CD key. The key is usually on a sticker on the back of the sleeve.

There are also many completely free programs that are more than enough for your needs as well, such as CDBurnerXP. IMO the only reason to use Nero is for the detailed features. I've gotten sick of the bloat though as well (even with customized install), so I have given Nero up completely at this point. Really miss gold ol' Nero 5.

Is this the continuation of the old Benq burner line that was killed off when liteon bought them? My benq 1655 is getting a little old but it still adapt to new media as it comes out and burns great. If this had similar adapive learning with sata that would be great.
