Ok rite. problemo

- bought a philips cdrw when building system
- bought *edit* afreey dvdrom when building system (these are both on the same ide cable)
- bought msi k7n420pro mobo when .......... (yeh i built it over a year ago)
- cdrw detected in bios however jumpers/cables set
- cdrw will only show up in windows when as master on cable
- cdrw will not burn, does not show up in some cdrw programs (easy cd, musicmatch etc)
- played wiv philips for ages, gave up, got replacement from dabs.com, same problem
- assumed it was wierd compatibility with philips/system, rmaed replacement philips as well
- old 4x2x8x Memorex works fine, as slave, burns (albeit slowly)
- bought liteon 52x24x52 drive, again get SAME TYPE PROBLEM that i had w/philips drive
- detects inbios woteva, only detects DVDROM when CDRW is slave, or CDRW master with dvdrom as slave
- only detects cdrw when on its own on cable
- when its on its own on cable & detected in windows, burns fine

whats going on? ive tried to bullet-point the problem to make it easier to read!
is it the dvdrom drive being possesive or sommat?
by the way i also tried the old philips drives in other machines that had other cdrw drives installed in them, and it still gave the non-detection problems.
gonna try with old slow memorex 4x2x8cdrw as slave, liteon as master and see if it works

note: i am using an 80wire ide cable for the dvdrom/cdrw cables. does this matter?

Use a 40 wire cable. Try the DVD as Cable select and the CDRW as Cable select and see what happens.

Cable select only works if the mobo supports it and requires a special cable (hence "cable" select") where the position of the drive on the cable determines whether it is a master or slave. I agree with the 40 pin cable though as that is all that is required for any CD/DVD drive and 80 pin cables have been known to cause detection problems, as have some of the slightly longer rounded cables.

Ibmcleod: From what you've said it would sound as though the DVD drive doesn't like your CDRW I would suggest trying another one, as they can be picked up for less than £30 nowadays it's not too much of a strain to the wallet. The fact that it works when it's on it's own but not when the dvd drive is connected would point to this.

Hope this helps

I have a similar problem, about a year ago, I made a bunch of data cd's with a bunch of crap on them, and now when I put them in, the cd/rw won't even recognize them, but when I try them on my gf's dell it works....any ideas???

Erm thats a completely different problem

The only thing I can think of that might cause that would be laser drift (laser moving further and further out of alignment over time) uncorrectable afaik. Possibly might be degradation of the cd surface requiring a better focused laser to read, which the dell (if it's a newish model) just might have.

I would suggest you create a new thread for any more answers to this question so as to not confuse the issue ibmcleod is having.

yeah, jtecp, hijacking someone else's thread is usually frowned upon... The other thing to try is cleaning the laser lens in your burner.

Can you edit your title so:

1. You don't seem like an incompetent person.

2. More people can know your problem and come in to help.

3. People who might have your same problem can use the search function and find it in the future.

Actually, you can use cable select without motherboard support and sometimes without a special cable. I have two optical devices in my spare A7N266 rig set both as CS and they work just fine with a standard IDE cable. As a matter of fact, they wouldn't work properly any other way (M -Yamaha CD/RW, S - Acer CD-ROM) Here's a link to some more info on Cable Select.
