BTW, for those of you that it doesn't upconvert for (using DVI), try buring the movie using DVD decryptor then try it again. I've read that's what you have to do for a lot of upconverting players when not using HDMI.

Yes, it will play Divx thru its USB port. Search "5960 firmware" for other codec info.

Not enthused on the Pentax A10 low light Divx performance, regardless of the simplistic interface with the 5960.

I have turned "sleep" off in the dvd settings...but that didnt help any.

If you wait a couple of days I'll report whether or not a HDMI -> DVI adapter makes a difference. Mine should be coming in a day or two.

I returned my philips and got the Sony but still no luck. Weird because the sony manual says HDMI to DVI should work fine. I just email Sony support to see what the deal is but i wont be holding my breath for them to get back to me

Very strange. It works on some and not on others. I was disappointed to hear that it didn't work with DVI but mine works fine. I have a Hitachi 53" rear projection HD TV (forgot model )

I bought Philips 5960 about 3 months ago, reflashed it with new firmware (to get SPDIF and HDMI work) and here what I think about the player:

1) Upconverting - it works, it works with HDMI to DVI cable but it's pretty much useless - do you really care if your TV will resize the picture or your DVD player will "upconvert"? It won't add any detail because it's still the same DVD disk!

2) DIVX/xVid support - it supports more standards and does it better than my old DVP642. IT DOES NOT SUPPORT HD DIVX!!!!!!!!!

3) USB port - it's too slow even for DiVX movies. you can use it for jpgs or mp3s, but to you really need it?

4) Only coaxial SPDIF out

5) Takes long time to power up.

6) The remote looks cheaper than DVP642

It is some improvement over DVP642, but not as much as I expected. Unsupported high definition dvix is a big dissapointment.

I bought it a couple of months ago in hopes that it would upconvert on my Syntax Olevia 30" LCD using a HDMI-DVI cable. It did not. It's not because of the cable...it's the TV and it's ability to recognize the upconversion, according to Syntax. I ended up returning it. But now that I bought a Philips 42" LCD with HDMI, I'm planning on picking this up again.
