Mine is starting to die after a little over a year. It is loud - I have to keep the door on my entertainment center closed when using it. It plays *everything* I have thrown at it, and I have a LOT of DIVX/XVID encoded stuff.

I will be getting another one. Picture quality is pretty good, works well with all the formats I care about, and is cheap enough that replacing it doesn't bug me after only one year.

Oh, and I did the firmware update the day i got it without issue. That was over a year ago, and I don't think they've had any more updates, so keep that in mind.

no open disc button on remote

If you are referring to using the remote to eject the tray, press the stop button for ~2 seconds to eject the tray, works great. Does anyone RTFM anymore? :Q

lol thanks for the tip, and to ur question...no.

Went to WalMart today intending to purchase this DVD Player even though it was cheaper at Bestbuy online. The large sign on top of the stack of players said $57.86, but the small pricetag on the shelf said $54.86, and that's what it rang up as.

So if you want to save a tiny bit of money (or just not spend money at BestBuy), check out Walmart. They had a huge stack of them at my store.

I get divx and it works then my next divx movie doesnt work. I check out the errors, run gspot (usually tells me nothing) I then go get an update and then I'm ok until the next xvid gets me again. I have 5 or 6 viewers with what must be 20-35 codecs. I'm loosing track because many were installed as a bundle Klite pack etc. Anyway getting to the point. I have a very hard time believing that any hardcoded appliance will play more than 20% of my media. Hell the latest version of gspot can't tell me what half of my files even want. Does this think have a upgradable firmware I can update every month or so? If it hit 80-85% I'd be pretty happy but as it is now I think I'm doomed to watching all this stuff on my pc monitor or at best on the pc through tv-out.
Anyone else running into this or am I just lucky?

Have you tried VLC media player? it's played everything I've thrown at it

Yes. It was the last player/codec I installed. So far it seems to pick up the scraps other players can't handle. Now I wonder if I could have just installed it and skipped the numerous codec hunts I've done.
Thanks.

Why pay tax if you can get it from amazon.com.

Same price, free shipping and a possible no tax. No tax in CA and many other places.

Thanks

I'm not sure, I was wondering that myself. I think I'm going to pick up one of these refurbs. They have them SO often, and that capacitor is the main problem that happens with these, that I'm leaning towards assuming these may simply be units with the defective capacitor already replaced for you.

Some non-Macrovision 642 firmware, version 5103, here:
Non-macrovision firmware

For the 642/17 player, the Macroversion firmware from Philips,

Version 1109

the remote region hack:

1. Turn on the player.
2. Hold down 'stop' button on remote until the tray opens.
3. Press on the remote: 7, 8, 9, OK, 0.
4. The number 0 will appear on the screen.
5. Hold down 'stop' button on remote until the tray closes.
6. Turn off the player

When I restarted the player it played region 1,2 and 3 DVD's without any problem. It does a great job on all my "home made" DVD's + / - R and RW as well as CD's.

My parents have one. When they first got it a year or two ago, the firmware just came out for srt subtitles. I think the latest version of the firmware will also get you srt sutitle support. Look here for more info:

google

don't forget that dvp642 does not support xvid encoded with the GMC and QPEL options (and in some cases too many consecutive bframes)

A few things:

1. The Best Buy link is dead. I don't see the player under "DVD players." Sold out?

2. Amazon is only selling these via dealers, so buying from them makes no sense unless you're looking for a refurb @ $51, which clearly gets trumped by the Wal-Mart deal.

3. Is this the best Divx player for the price? I'm not up to speed on what other options there are, but while visiting Canada for the weekend I saw over @ www.redflagdeals.com that there is a Divx DVD player on sale @ Toys R Us for $25.

Thanks!

Use MPEG4 Modifier to remove QPel & GMC. It also unpacks packed bitstreams. The Philips DVP642 can not play Divx / Xvid files with packed bitstreams.

I have a few vieo files that play extremely pixelated. They are Xvid and show as unpacked in MPEG4 Modifier, but have odd resolutions when opened in Video Inspector. Does this player have difficulty playing odd resolutions?

Hey chibchakan, the vids were Howard TV episodes downloaded from the net.
