I remember there was a football game where a linebacker took out a streaker. I get the feeling that the streaker would rather have gotten tazed than trucked by a padded NFL linebacker.

Also, why are people assuming that the person running around isn't going to hurt anyone? Do police officers require the talent of mind-reading when they recruit now? Some idiot jumping onto the field could just be a drunk idiot, or it could be some crazy person who could actually hurt a player. I'm more for preventive protection and enforcement, instead of waiting for someone to get hurt and then going "Oh Sh.."

Quite honestly, if they need 10+ staff members corral the guy, I'm starting to lean towards the taser as a more economical approach... what if you got several guys on the field?

The police should assign two of their most athletic officers to baseball stadium duty. If a fan gets on the field send them out with a wild animal net. Chase the guy down and throw a net over him. Then give him a choice of going off the field peacefully or in a humiliating fashion being dragged like a trapped animal.

In the past, they've been tackled, been injured or injured the tackler.

But that's so much more fun!

Personally, I just think that cop should lose some damn weight.

But seriously now. This entire tazer thing has gotten out-of-hand, and has been for a while now. They're supposed to be used in lieu of a firearm! You don't want to kill the person, but they need to be stopped NOW. A kid yelling in protest is not an acceptable target, nor is the guy running around on the green.

I cannot respect an authority-figure who allows himself to fall down that slope.

This is not "anti-cop" you massive idiots, it's anti-abuse. You people say that same shit regarding other subjects, too. For example, if someone disagrees with the use of military might in the world, they're "anti-america".

It's so black and white, in here.

Edit: Wasn't calling you an idiot, Caveman, that was for some of the others.

This was a clever way of both taking what I said out of context and calling me an idiot without doing it directly.

Then again, someone so sad and passive-aggressive like that isn't really worth my time anyway. Enjoy the rest of your day, sir.

There's a difference between walking on your lawn and disrupting a scheduled event, ignoring warnings, and acting like a retard. How about you provide a valid comparison?

It was a valid comparison. Ever hear of proportionate force? They had several freaking guys surrounding him. You're telling me a taser was the only way out?

You subdue with necessary force. Save the overwhelming stuff for actual threats. Nope, this was a case of a fatass cop being shown up by a dumb drunk 17 year old. He didn't like it, so he showed him who's boss.

Was the kid an idiot? Yes. He deserved to be arrested and tried for any number of things. Does this exonerate the cop? Not in the least.

And like I said, the taser is potentially lethal. For all they know this is one of those guys with a heart condition. Personally I'd rather he had drawn an actual gun and fired a couple of rounds into some unoccupied grass. Would've got the point across IMO.

Did you even watch the video? He came withing close proximity of a couple players more than once and showed no signs of hurting anyone. Inform yourself before posting please.

I don't think that's the intended use, at least not in the way you expressed it in that statement. A taser is non-lethal way to subdue those who are incooperative when demands are issued to them by law enforcement. Yes, the ideal method would have been to tackle the guy but you can't say he was abusing his powers if the kid was not complying to his demands[resisting arrest]. It's interesting you think the responses are so black and white when your own response is pretty much the same.

tackling someone is potentially lethal as well.

i doubt someone with a heart condition would be out drinking and running around on a baseball field.

i mean come on, use your damn head.

Dumbass deserved it for running onto the field in the middle of a game. There was proper medical staff available as soon as the kid was hit with the taser and thus and cruelty or "what if" situations that might be questioned are put to rest.

That was what 600 BC or so? You can trace societal behavior problems to the begining of time, and the same "It was more orderly before" arguement just as long.

Not really...there has been a HUGE change in the behavior of people in America since the late 70's. That's not that big a time frame.

In the 70's, you just about NEVER saw or heard of things like this. You just about NEVER heard of kids mouthing off to teachers, assaulting teachers, and being downright belligerent.

If one did, it was BIG news. "Student assaults teacher"...that would have been all over the local/regional news, if not national news, in the 70's.

Barely makes a blip on your local paper or TV station's "local news" link on their website these days.

It's just a fact. And now that these kids who grew up with a lack of respect and discipline are young adults, it's been carried over to all of society.

Not as much so IMHO, tackling is also more easily controlled. Can't even count the number of times I've been tackled/tripped in pick up games over the years, always came away with some grass burns and a twisted ankle at worse. Without pads of any kind.

If you have a heart condition - what the hell are you doing rushing the field anyway?

My sister has a minor arrhythmia, she does freaking ballet. However it is a nervous problem, so a taser could theoretically royally fuck things up if it hits the wrong spot.

I'm not saying it's likely, but it's a valid possibility that the cop can't foresee.

Typically, ballet does not involve running from people, getting tackled and/or tasered.

Typically.

No, typically it's a lot more athletic. In terms of Cardio and otherwise.

Its not as jarring as being tackled (unless you suck and fall over, or someone you're dancing with falls on you), and it doesn't come with the risk of being tased.

Seriously - its really not hard, if you resist arrest, there's a chance you'll be tased. Therefore, if you have a heart condition, you should likely not be putting yourself in situations where you'll be resisting arrest. I would pass that on to your sister, if you're so concerned about her heart. Make sure she doesn't try to do ballet on the field at Citizens Bank Park.

The taser vs tackle debate is pretty much pointless, both has its pros and cons. The argument was whether the use of the taser was abuse of power by the cop and it isn't IMO... it was certainly too much but far from total abuse. It's easy to sit behind the computer and have all the time you need to dissect the video frame by frame but in the heat of the moment, there's only action and reaction and when you have chased the guy for what may have felt like minutes even though seconds go by, you might think enough is enough sooner than those who are watching. And in the end, the kid was being stupid and completely noncompliant until he was taken down. This is not a case of a guy who just stands still with disobedience and tasered. The guy was actually running from the cop... can't say his decision was abuse.
