Sorry if this is a repost, but I stopped by staples this morning and they had about 15 phillips 8x/4x/32x cdrw drives for $24.50 a piece. If you take and find something for $5 or do like I did and get two, then use the $10 off $30 coupon that is floating around you can get them for around $20. It was $42.22 with tax, or $21.11 a piece. They arent real fast, but that is a real good deal.
The SKU according to the reciept it 452248.
The sticker on the box with the price is dated yesterday, 12/19/01.

Good luck.

If you are lucky enough to find one of these, you should also pick up one of the 4 outlet surge protectors for $5 ( SKU #462317 ) that has a $5 MIR! Then tack on the $10 off $30 coupon thats floating around somewhere.
So: $25 + $5 = $30 -$10 coupon -$5 MIR = $15 for an 8x CD Burner & Surge protector! Not to bad!

yumyum - This is a clearance deal and all clearance deals whether it to be Staples, OfficeDepot, OfficeMax, Target or Walmart are regional, your mileage may vary sorta deals. So in other words, they are typically NOT nationwide.

It's definitely worth a look though, who'da thought $20 for an 8x/4x/32x CD-RW? Flaming hot!

Anyone care to share the fireware upgrade link for this CDRW? I know it had been posted before, but it looks like the original thread is now gone.

I got one of the 12x8x36 on the $50 deal a while ago, and I would not really recommened going Phillips. Even with the latest firmware the drive hates el cheap Imation CDRs - basically it locks up trying to read them and forces you to reboot (hard). It only seems to like Taiyo's, which are a pain to find in my area - but otherwise, not a bad drive.

Can't comment on the Imation CDRs, I've never used them...I have used Office Depot brand CDRs, TDK CDRs, Fuji Taiyos, and PNYs from their latest get 100 for free deal. Not many problems that weren't my fault. I did have to reboot one time though after one of the PNYs. And EZCDCreator doesn't feel like loading anymore. Oh well, Nero is simpler.

Even with the latest 2.5x firmware, I haven't been able to burn at 8x with Imation, Memorex, and several other brand CDRs - I get the dreaded BURN. Burning at 4x is no better than my old drive!

Luckily I have one of the Zip 12/10/32s going in soon.

I used to have one of these drives, and I used the CompUSA CDR's in it just fine. I wasn't using the 2.5 firmware.

Well that's certainly a productive post. Anything to keep upping that post count I suppose.

As a side note, I got this drive a few months back for about $15 after rebate. It runs fine, even without 2.5. For that money, you really can't go wrong. It's not a high-end burner, but for this amount of cash, what do you expect? It's more than decent, to be sure.

Screw Phillips, as Phillips screwed me up on that $40 rebate.
I will NEVER buy a phillips product again! :|

Mine sucked really bad and I was angry that they didn't have firmware listed on their site for it. Then someone posted that link for the firmware upgrade and I have not had a problem except for the iMation cds, but even my sony hates those. It works fine with every other cheap cds I have picked up.
