I picked up a Phillips 3040/37 DVD player on BF at BestBuy, and it cuts the edges on most divx files I have. Does this do the same? It's so annoying.

This dvd player is nice. I purchased it because my main dvd plaeyrs weren't playing my dual layers. I got it for around $42 with rebates and savings at CC.

Make sure to update to the latest firmware if you want to use HDMI along with the digital audio to a receiver. If you don't, you'll only get 2-channel sound through the digital audio. Otherwise, I agree, it's a very nice DVD player for the price.

Let me get this straight - the optical out on this player is only 2 channels? Or are you referring to the audio through the HMDI cable?

My friend just got one from cc and says it ouputs dolby digital and dts better than he's ever heard it!
So hopefully these are fresh units with updated firmware pre-installed

I believe that they do not advertise these as DTS, but seems to pass through OK out of the box in his case..

Guy I work with just got one of these, the real winner here is that it has the USB hookup where you can plug in a flash drive/external usb enclosure and play your movies off of there.

Looks like a good deal; I've been looking for a good price on an upconverting DVD player.

Is it really a USB 1.1 port as the OP posted?

I just bought one of these from Philips' employee store for <$60 shipped. The picture is outstanding through HDMI at 720P on my projector. A word of warning though - this player will not pillar box 4:3 content. On my 16x9 screen the player stretches the 4:3 picture to fit the screen. Unfortunately, it also still does it even if you go into the setup menu and choose either of the 4:3 settings, apparently because it still recognizes the TV as 16x9. For the life of me I don't know what the heck Philips was thinking. My 642s play everything fine, but I can't and won't watch a distorted image. If you like TNT-HD's stretched version of movies this would be perfect for you. Personally I prefer to make the choice of watching 4:3 material in it's native aspect ratio without being distorted, or to zoom and fill the screen if I like. It does do an exceptional job with widescreen. I rarely want to watch anything that is 4:3 on my projector setup, so I'm keeping the player. But if Philips doesn't come out with a firmware correction for this problem I'll be looking at other manufacturers' players for my next one.

This player does not have optical out, only coaxial. It will send DD and DTS out with the latest firmware thru coaxial out. It only sends 2 channel thru HDMI. Basically, you can use HDMI for video and stereo sound; but to get multichannel sound, you must use coaxial output.
Also, the player has no S-video.
Otherwise, the upscaled video and sound are outstanding.

Mine streams divx just fine from both usb memory stick and usb hard drive, not sure why you say its too slow for movies. Hard drive movies take longer to start about 60 seconds, assumes its buffering...

Also picked another one up from phillips employee store for $54.99 shipped last week (and no i'm not a phillips employee).

How does an upconverting player like this one going to compare to HD-DVD or Blue-Ray players?

Sorry, audio newbie question here: is there a real "difference" between digital audio from an optical cable versus a coaxial cable?

And, thanks for clearing up the HDMI audio issue.

Off to go buy more cables. :disgust:

How does this DVD player stack up when it comes to playing Rips?

Any other DVD players that are highly suggested for computer users.

I am in the market for one.

Optical out = coaxial digital out, unless you are one of those "special audiophiles" that can tell the difference... in that case though you'll need to invest another $20k in your system anyway.

bought this Toshiba for my GF

can't speak on the unit OP is refering to, but you asked about "rips" I bought that one for my GF's birthday, it's played every DiVX & XViD we've thrown at it flawlessly. A lot of people complaing that the unit is light and cheaply made. Pretty true, but it's not like you move the fvcker around a lot. As for playing DVD/DiVX it's bad ass.

If you're talkin about DVD-Shrink type rips, I can't comment except the one we tried worked fine...
