She's been using iPhones for a while, but her current iPhone 5 (or maybe 5S) is driving her crazy - the battery life sucks, and I think she's just gotten tired of it.

She mostly uses her phone for messaging, facebook, and pictures. Not a power user by any stretch. She's got pretty small hands, and I can't see her with anything much bigger than a 5" screen or so. A good camera and lots of storage are probably the biggest things for her.

Oh, and she has a pretty bad track record with dropping and spilling things on her phone.

Any thoughts? I don't want to spend too much, but it would be nice to get her something new. Verizon, no contract, and international compatible would be nice but not 100% necessary.

Budget? The Samsung Galaxy S7 sounds perfect for everything you said, but some people would think of it as too expensive.

iPhone SE.

If they're not telling you they want to try Android, switching the OS on them is a bad idea.

And put a case on it, or be less clumsy with the expensive electronics.

Avoiding accidents may be tricky, but yeah -- the iPhone SE is so much better than the 5/5s, and not just because it's faster. The battery life is much better. I know users who went from a few hours of heavy use at best to making it through the entire day with room to spare. The 64GB model should be more than enough.

Just put a fresh battery in her phone for now, wait for her to break it then replace.

What is your wife tired of? If just the battery life, get the 5SE.

The biggest reason against the 5SE is that in most ways, it'll feel just like her current phone. Exact same body, exact same display, same OS - it's not a knock against the phone, only that people often crave something that feels new. The battery, camera, and speed will be much better, but in day to day use, it'll mostly feel the same.

My wife has tiny hands and much prefers the 6/6S over the 5/5S body, though one hand usability is lower. You could wait until the iPhone 7 comes out and pickup a 6S when secondary prices drop, though that's still over 3 months away. Mint 64GB 6S on Verizon are around $560 on swappa, and I'd expect that to drop noticeably closer to Sept.

Somehow it went over my head that the wife was using an iPhone

I completely agree with the sentiment (and had said the exact same thing several times before in here). iPhone SE would be great for her. I actually just picked one up for my dad last week to replace his old (though surprisingly still worked quite well) 4S. He was really happy with it.

What is your phone? An iPhone? If so which one? If it's a bigger one (6, 6s, 6+, 6s+) does she like the biggerness?

If not a SE is a slam dunk.

IPhone SE and a big ass case.

pretty much this. the iPhone SE is pretty much the iPhone 6 in a form factor similar to the iphone 5. So the screen is less than 5 inches and even with a bulky case to protect it from her habit of dropping it and spilling liquids on it the phone shouldn't be too large for her to use.

Just get the 64GB model and not he 16GB model or that will suck for her.

Good advice. I did and her response was "I don't care if it's an iPhone, as long as it actually works." Hence, this thread!
How comfortable is she with tech? if it's not very then get the SE, there aren't many high-end android phones with smaller screens afaik these days.

It's the 6s guts in the 5/s body, actually. So it gets the A9 (iPhone 6 has an A8), 2GB RAM, better optics, etc.

Basically none. Maybe the Sony z5c?

I would say 6 or 6s. I do appreciate that Apple offer a decent choice in the SE, but the screen size is an issue. Of course she might not feel inconvenienced with the SE coming from 5s but knowing that there are phones with larger screens it would be a shame if she simply goes with limited experience just because she has no experience with a phone with larger screen.

The S7 is also a great option if she does not mind learning a new OS (which should not be too hard these days given the similarity between the iOS and Android)

Good to know.

OP unless she's as tech-oriented as the average poster in these forums in general I'd just let her look at the the iPhone 6s 6s Plus, and SE to see which one she likes best at the hipster fa.... I mean Apple Store....

Mea Culpa I just couldn't help myself.
