Guys,

If you have any experience w/ a phone line network kit (Diamond HomeFree 10MB PCI) and the KT133A chipset, please read on.

A friend and I put together a system for him last week: IWill KK266, TBird 1.2G 266MHz, 256MB Crucial CAS2, IBM 60GXP 60G, Asus V7700 GeForce 2 DDR 32MB, Toshiba 16x DVD, Enlight 7237 w/ 300w p.s.

System went together fine, Win98SE installed w/o incident. All software, including AT&T cable modem access went in fine. Problem arises when he installs the Diamond HomeFree phone line network card in his computer. The KK266 locks up, and only when he removes the Diamond software and the card will the KK266 boot up into but Safe Mode. I've suggested he experiment w/ slot placement of the two NIC's (cable modem and Diamond phone line card), and see if that eliminates the problem.

Do you have any other suggestions? All are welcome <g>!

Jeff H,
Not to take away from your thread but I thought it might help you to know that you're not alone here. I'm having a similar problem on a machine I built a couple days ago. Diamond Homefree, Iwill KK266, Win98SE and VIA 4in1 4.31 final drivers both with and wthout the IRQ routing. Everything installs and works perfectly, including a SB Live card. The HF card installs and the machine works properly as long as it's not connected to the phoneline. The problem comes about when I actually plug the phoneline into the card. The machine boots normally until it hits the windows splash screen, then it slows to a crawl. Actually it's much much slower than a crawl. It's so slow it looks like it's locked up. It takes about an hour for windows to boot from the splash screen to the login screen. I did try installing the card when it's plugged in and that's a no go. It either locks up or goes so slow it appears to be. I've tried different PCI slots and another, known good, card and versions 2.1 and 2.2 of the HF drivers. None of those worked either. I've booted into safe mode w/ network support and while it's faster, it's still running so slow that the computer is unusable. The only way it runs normally is when the phoneline is NOT connected and a fat lot of good that is. I'm quickly running out of ideas. Tonight I'll try a different phone cable and wall jack but I don't hold much hope for that working because up until I replaced my A7V mobo with this one everything worked flawlessly.

Anybody have any ideas? Maybe IRQ conflicts or something in the BIOS? (device manager says everything is OK) Could it be a networking issue?

ANY help here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
