Number 1 post lol, anyway, I've got a questiona about phone lines. Right now, I connect at a measely 28.8 and it is awedul for online gaming and such, I mean I get around on the web, but well you get the picture. When I play half life, if I find a near server I get around 270 ping, which isn't too bad, but when the screen gets filled up with the people it flutuates a lot. I know it's not my modem because I've had two different ones, right now I'm on a COnexant Softk56, granted it's not anywher enear the greatest, but I get 28.8 everytime. Now my conclusion is that it is indeed my phone lines. IS there anyway possible way to upgrade them to 56k compatibility? I've tried calling the phone company, Uswest or I guess it is Qwest now, but they weren't much help. Thanks.

Not much you can do, unfortunately. Hell, the phone company will usually only guarantee a 9600 connection! About all you can do is move to a different location, hardly a practical alternative.

I once had a second line installed (before DSL ) for internet and that line would only do 28.8 while my primary line did 50k consistantly. Yes, I tested this about 20 times, I couldn't believe it. I made them switch the connections at the pole so I could keep my numbers. The bottom line, it depends on MANY factors, but for me it was the number of lines multiplexed at the pole! My good line was direct, my bad line was multiplexed with like 5 other lines AT THE POLE!

The best thing to do is wait for a chance to talk to the tele repair guy. If you see him around, tell him your situation and ask him to have a look. (Offering him a $20 bill should help). Or call and ask to have a second line installed. When the guy shows, be sure to tell him your situation. As I remember, it only cost me $50 to have the second line installed plus the month charge.

Good Luck and may you get DSL or cable soon!

Thanks for the quick responses, I thought that is what would be the case unfortunately. I really need 56K to even play online games correctly. I don't care about my download speed, that is decent, I ususally stay at around 3.1 if I'm Lucky, just need the connection speed for online gaming. DSL ain't an option, that is why I brought this subject up. If I could get it I would, but for me, it's out of the question. Funny how everyone is like "Jeez If I had Dsl I'd be happy..." etc and well I'd be Happy jsut to bet standard 56K lol.

Another thing to remember is your distance from the Local Switch at the phone building, every line in excess of 12k to 15k get loaded to prevent circuit loss unfortunately a load coil prevents signals in excess of 33.6 and then the greater the distance the more signal loss. Another thing is to find out is if you are working out of a SLC unit which may be fiber/copper fed to improve loss but again the conversion of analog to digital and back again will hinder 56k performance as an overhead 8k steam keep the chanel units alligned. If DSL is offered in your area there is usually a 12 to 15k limit from the phone switch. If you have Cabletv in your area you may want to lookinto that option. Good luck

Wow, a 270 ping is great. I usually have at least that while playing CS online, and my connect speed is usually 49333. Also if you're having stutter problems, maybe it's you're computer ( vid card/memory/cpu).

Also, welcome to the forums.

Also I had two 3com gamming modems that were terrible. I don't think they liked my ISP or something. My Best Data PCI 56k cheapy works just great. It has the Rockwell chipset.

If you want to do some diagnosing I can give you a few tips to try.

If you live in a house go outside and find the telephone line interface mounted to the outside of your home. Sometimes in or on the box is a modular connector just like ones inside. If there is when you unplug it it disconnects your whole house. The ideal thing at this point is to test the line coming to the house by plugging the computer directly to the block outside thereby bypassing all of the house wiring. Hopefully it isn't too far away. If you are in an apartment OHWELL. If you can connect in the high 40's it is either your house wiring or something plugged into the line.

/edit If the above doesn't help don't bother with the inside stuff it won't make a difference. As badthad said they probobly won't help. But if you were useing their internet service "phone company" the might more compelled to help you though.

Inside the house
First unplug all devices except for computer. Then dialup and check connection. If you connect in the high 40's try plugging in each device until the problem arises. It was my answering machine causing probs. Don't forget to unlplug caller ID Sattellite TV etc.

One last thing is to go to radio slack and buy a modular phone line tester. Plug into all outlets or at least the one comupter uses. this will check to see if polarity is reversed. Sometimes the tip and ring are backwards for various reasons. Switch the wires around if necessecary.

Hope this helps

Wow, thanks for all that great information. I will surely try to give them a try. Oh, I have ATT interent and they are also my long distance provider, I guess I could always try and give them a call. I've always connected at 28.8, I've tried differnet ISP's to no Avail, although twice I think, I connected at 32.1 ^_^. Don't know why, maybe noone was on their phone in my nieghborhood at the time lol. It ain't my computer, I'm on a Celeron 533 with 192 MB of ram and am in the process of making myself a new sys, Duron 750, DDR, but that is no matter. I'm pretty sure it's just that my phone box is old, becasue I never connect above or below 28.8 theoretically. I see what I can do wit all tips I got here. Thanks for the fast responses, much appreciated.
