Hi guys, I just purchased a digital camera, and I'm wondering if you guys have any recommendations on printers to print photos. I'm looking to spend at $150 to $200. Is that even feasible? Please let me know what you guys think are the best ones for that price.... thanks in advance! I really appreciate it!

I made a similar thread a week or so ago and got the Canon i960 as my results 9 times out of 10. I bought the printer on sale at Staples and have never looked back. The print quality is phenomenal.

I'll be the black sheep again

HP 5550 or 5552 looks great with the 6-colour cartridges at 4800dpi on HP Glossy paper

Def go with Epson. The quality is much better than most, if not all other printers on the market. I have an Epson photo 825, but if you want to go higher there's the 1280 which is amazing. I go to the school of print media at RIT, and all they use is epson.

The problem with all inkjets that use dye base inks, is that the pictures will fade in a relatively short period of time. The initial picture looks great but hang it on your refrigerator and a few months or weeks later compare it to a freshly printed one. BIG DIFFERENCE!!!!

The only solution is a pigmented ink printer. Output from a pigmented ink printer will last years (30 - 40 or more). The problem with pigmented inks though is bronzing when using glossy paper. Now though, Epson has the R800 which corrects that problem as well.

So if you really care about your photos lasting, that is really the only way to go.

Look, here's the deal with Epson vs. Canon. Up until Canon came out with the i-series printers a couple of years ago, Epson photo printers were the best mainstream choice for color photo printers. However, Epson printers have always had the problem of head-clogging if they are left too long without being used (10 days or so). Canon printers do not have this problem because the print heads are part of the cartridge itself, not the printer. The Canon i860 and i960 are every bit as good as the 800 and 900 series Epson printers. I'm not sure about the new R200 and R300, though -- I haven't had the chance to evaluate those yet. HP supposedly has some nice offerings, but to tell you the truth, I haven't considered an HP in years because every one I ever owned eventually developed serious paper feed problems that I couldn't resolve. They probably don't have these same problems anymore, but there's a sour taste in my mouth from them and the competitors have surpassed them long ago.

In any case, you can get superb photos from either the Epson or Canon printers. Don't forget that the paper quality plays a huge role in the quality and long life of your prints.

but but but.... LOL

How come I am the only one who knows that HP's new printers (ie. the 6-colour capable 4800dpi ones) are brillaint photo reproducers?
Not only are the cheap 5550, 5552 etc ones capable, the photosmart printers use the same cartridges, and they give absolutely amazing quality photos (mostly due to their brilliance at keeping the temperature accurate to the original digitals).

HPs are ok printwise but will eat you a hole in your wallet for INK. Avoid them.

I'll have to go with the "take your photos to Walmart or Sam's Club" option. You'll never be able to beat the color saturation and life of these pictures, much less the cost. Even if you got the printer for free, the paper and ink costs are more than having them printed. At 20-25 cents for a 4x6, you can't beat it.

For the original poster, I would also recommend the Canon i960. As for HP's photo quality: it isn't bad, but both Epson and Canon are better still. Even when you pull out PhotoRET Pro and the HP7960, it doesn't match up very well compared to the R300 and i960. The only area where the 7960 does have an advantage is in a larger grayscale gamut when in "eight-color" mode, giving it an edge on most black and white photos. Otherwise, you're looking at a more expensive unit that: costs more to run, prints considerably slower, and has poorer photo quality. Not much reason to consider HP.

Also, for Pauli: while the Epson R300 is more feature-rich, the i960 is a better printer as it'll offer better photo quality and much faster photo print speeds. The R200 just looks like a R300 stripped of its built-in card readers.

For egale: pigmented inks do have better fade resistance as compared to dye-based inks, but that does come at the price of a smaller color gamut. For this reason, current top-end pigment ink based printers, like the Epson 2200 and R800, are better suited as art printers that also offer good photo quality as opposed to top quality photo printers period. If I was an Epson fan and wanted their top quality letter-size photo printer, I'd rather have the R300 over the R800.

If you are going to be printing a large amount of photo's I'd actualy recc. going to Costco they have extremly expensive Die sub printers that blow the doors off any consumer grade printers and it's actualy cheaper to take your memory card there and print out your photos there than to do it yourself (also as an fyi they have image editing software there if you would like to use it ex removal of red eye, ect...) just my 2 cents and hope this helps... oh and if you do still want to get a photo printer I'll chime w/ another rec. for the cannon I960, my aunt has one and is very happy.

I beg to differ with the "blow the doors off any consumer grade printers" statement. I have photos on the walls of my office, taken with my digital camera, that I printed from my Epson 890 that are indistinguishable from lab prints - traditional film or digital. It did take a bit of experimentation with the print driver settings and different paper types to get to this point, but I have found settings that produce brilliant photos. I'm not yet sure about color longevity in my printed photos, but I have some that are almost 2 years old that show no sign of fading.

You may be correct about it being cheaper, though, but there is something to be said for the convenience of printing a single photo in the size you want, any time you want it, at home, without requiring anyone elses participation.

I'm extremely happy with my HP Photosmart 7550. Plus it acts as an 4 in 1 memory card reader!
