Watch out guys, I don't think this is a good deal partly because you'll run through ink cartridges like that. I've never seen a printer use up that much ink. My sister has that printer, and it seems like I'm buying her new cartridges every week. Just a cautionary note before you buy it.

but they really liked the Hewlett Packard DeskJet 640C, which is selling for $71.95 + $8.51 shipping, so roughly $80 shipped.

CNET liked the Z12's quality if you don't print too much since ink is gonna cost you, roughly 13 cents per page black and 67¢ color. But for $55 shipped it can't be beat!

1greatguy, the problem with the hp 640 and even the lexmark z12 is that the resolution isnt as good as on the epson. the 580's is 1440 where the 640's is only 600.

Resolution doesn't matter much if the print head isn't putting down the right colors, or they are banded and blotchy. The HP is the better printer.

i have the epson stylus color 760 and it doesn't use that much ink at all, i think it's about 99 at most b&amp;m stores (i got mine at compusa) the resolution is 1440 and i can tell a big difference between that and the 600 dpi of most other printers, the 760 is a very good printer!

I'm a HP man myself, but the 1440 DPI resolution of the Epsons really stands out for text. First time I saw it I almost crapped my pants that a inkjet could look that good on normal quality. It does eat the ink though, so it's not that hot for people who print a lot.

The color printing is still the realm of HP. The photomatch system with the HP scanner/printer and photopaper yields amazing results (a bit costly though). If you do occasional B&amp;W text printing this is probably a good deal.

If you do a lot of B&amp;W text, think about buying a used 5L on eGay. Lasers are cheap per page. The only problem with the L series is they misfeed (suck in multiple pages) like crazy, but if you can deal with that, a laser for the same cost is an awesome deal.

this isn't an epson vs hp war, i'm just saying this particular printer stinks. If you wanna go bargain basement cheap, go with the hp or lexmark. If you have the money, go for the Epson 1270. No HP or Lexmark even comes close.

oh, and regardless of resolution, &quot;subdued and blotchy&quot; is still subdued and blotchy, be it 1440 dpi or 600.

i've never used the printer myself, but two separate sites say it stinks, and I believe them.
