Has anybody that received "backorder" message with their confirmation found out when they're going to start shipping?

Fitzm-

Regarding your "What is the proper amount of CF memory?" IMHO-Depends on the camera, but for average at home use, any amount is OK (evem 8mb)depending on how often you want to upload and purge your CF memory card. I don't take many high resolution pics. High resoultions take forever to download for friends, family, or Fleabay ads. I usually use the lowest resoultion setting and might bump up a notch on my soon to be decommisioned Kodak 240.

Now with my new (if PhotoAlley delivers) Coolpix 950 with a 2.1 megapixel vs the 1.3 MP Kodak, the 8mb won't go very far and you may find upload and purge that often a hassle. Also if you take a trip you might find that you are severly lacking with 8mb.

The Coolpix had four resolutions selections. Here's how much an 8mb will hold: Basic-32 Normal-16 Fine-8 High-1 So a 48Mb will hold 192,96,48,16 respectively. So I bought a 16mb and a 48mb from C4Sure (for like $56 after rebates and shipping with USB readers) the day after I purchased the Coolpix. I think that will be just about right with an 8,16,48mb modules for me if I take a trip or vacation. And on a long trip, I might want to have a higher resolution set on the Coolpix for good reprints. With an 8,16,and 48MB module I could take 144 pictures in "Normal" mode or 72 in "Fine" mode which is OK if I delete bad pics as I go along. Ideally I'd love to have 2 64mb but I won't buy until I find a deal. I keep wondering if the current RAM memory will have an effect on CF prices.

Also, buy the conditioner/charger with four 1600mnh rechargeable batteries from Thomas Distributing. Get a second set of four batteries to give yourself a backup set of batteries. These may not be enough from what I've read about the peower consumption of the Coolpix 950 in the reviews.

Actually - the Coolpix 950 has more picture modes than that! It can take TEN different size of pictures (3 resolutions, 3 compression modes, plus uncompressed). So you have complete control over quality vs. storage size!

ALso: note to those who get one. Make sure you check the firmware, who knows how old these cameras are. The latest firmware is 1.3. This web site tells you how to check and more: Nikon 950 User Guide

Want a cheaper battery option with great life? Get a external battery you put on your belt! Battery Pack for your Camera

Also, be prepared for redeye right away! The flash on most handheld cameras is too close to the lense and this is the cause of "redeye". The Nikon digitals are pretty bad with this. The solution: don't use flash (external light) or build yourself a flash bracket to get the damn thing further away from the lense. Nikon 950/990 External Flash FAQ -- here is an example Cool flash bracket for Nikon 990 with photos - note that the 990 has a better tripod mount, but the previous external flash FAQ should cover that.

Other sites of interest: Nikon 950 Tips and Information - and - Cool oddball info about the Coolpix 950

And the best for last, go to this Awesome review of Nikon CP950 -- it is basically a complete tutorial of how to use your camera. Take 10 minutes and go through it, it has awesome pictures of all the settings and so forth.

Happy Thanksgiving. Was time to give back to those here on the forums!

Depends on how much it is I would think. If it's outrageous I will probably take my chances. But, as much abuse as a camera takes, as expensive as this camera is, and the fact that we're talking about some pretty complicated hardware here I will probably be inclined to get it.

I never get extended warranties on T.V.'s, stereo's, microwaves, stoves, fridges, salt shaker's , but I usually do on stuff with lot's of moving parts and mobile electronics like camera's, camcorders, etc.
Just my humble opinion but, to each his own.

Are you talking about getting a 2 year warrenty on the Nikon 950? I wouldn't recommend it... It was selling at lowest price of $850 12 months ago... now it is under $400.... in another 12 months the 990 will be selling at $350 or $400.

There is your extended warrenty

warranties are good if you really don't do maintance on your camera, regular cleaning and change of batteries is not that hard. And should take in store to do interior cleaning every 6month or so depend on how much you use the camera. As for digital cameras, I suggest just change batteries frequenty and don't leave it anywhere too hot/cold.

Has anybody's eBates account actually been credited? I've got multiple orders from PhotoAlley (that have all already shipped) and I've actually already received my order from Mercata, but eBates has not credited my account for ANYTHING. It's about $300 worth that I'm expecting from them, too... this could be annoying :\

You can still get the previous deal ($100 off $600, $50 off $400....)
It's just in the form of a coupon code now. A CSR gave it to me when the site was screwed up. I used it the other day to get the s100, and then I checked it today to see if it still works. It showed up in my cart. I guess I can't post the code so ICQ me if you want it.

At the very bottom of the "shopping cart" screen, below the "order advice" heading is a small link for coupons. It will open a box to enter the coupon code.
