I just want to let everyone know that besides "DIGITAL" cameras, there are some good cameras like the NIKON N80QD which is a really nice SLR camera, I went through the order process just wanting to see how much it would cost, oh man, those babies would cost around $700 with a lense and you can get it for around $480. I love photos, I do a lot of photography so REAL camera counts more for me, digital is just for web and computer stuff. REMEMBER to go through Ebates.

SLR cameras!

I LOVE NIKONS!

UPDATE::UPDATE::UPDATE::UPDATE::UPDATE:: COUPON CODE POSTED UNder my user Name ETLA in Fatwallet, go go go!!UPDATE::UPDATE::UPDATE::UPDATE::UPDATE::UPDATE::

And if you do decide to get that digital camera, don't forget to pick up PCMAGs editors choice Epson Stylus Photo 870 for $130 delivered after MSN Passport and $50MIR(valid only with purchase of digital camera).

ETLA ,
I agree about the "Real Camera" SLR Deal... Camera shops generally never have discounts and you have to shell out the money.
The N80QD is way out of my reach , but I did get a Nikon N65 for just above $300 shipped!
It came with a Nikon 28-80mm lens , a Strap and the batteries!
I am debating if I should go for the Tamron 28-200 mm Super lens (too tempting for $150!!!) or stick with Nikon lenses and maybe get a 70mm to 300 mm lens and go through trouble of swapping lenses.
Laters,
Mihir

Has anyone been able to get the 20% off deal to work at Photoalley?

I tried placing a couple of orders, but I get an error message at the last screen.

When I called them, they said that there is a problem with the order system, and that it will hopefully be fixed by tomorrow. She said that "NONE" of the orders that have been placed using the 20% off coupon have been placed successfully.

But she encouraged me to keep trying, saying that I'll know it works if I get a successful order confirmation number at the end of the checkout process.

Has anyone received this?

Thanks,
Ekimzulad

Ekimzulad - I am running into the same problem. I was able to make a purchase yesterday with no problems, but today is proving to be another story. I initially thought it was because I was trying to go thru the Ebates portal - but it seems to be that Photoally is having problems on their end.

I have to keep trying before the deal expires on 11/22

lore: it's really depends on what level you are seeking for. If you just want to get a nice camera for fun. Then choose those the zoom lenses. But if you are serious about photograph. I would say you had better get fix lenses. Like AF50mm/f1.4D or AF85/f1.4D as a starting lenses. Just remember, if you really like photography, then you will spend much more on lenses than the camera body itself.
Too bad I do not have enough money recently to buy the camera, actually I thought this deal for 3 days already. But I would never put a Tamron lens on my nikon camera. IMHO

For all Photographers: You should know what you want already I am sure, I work in a photolab and I develop and print all my black and white photos, I print my color ones too at the school lab here. I think Nikons are one of the best 35mm cameras for some reason I used Canons and others before, but for 35, I wish I can just get a FM2 haha, the old old style ones, but it's hard to find a good used one. BUt to answer a few people's questions, it really depend on what you want to shoot, I do a lot of street photography and I like to used medium format cameras like Pendex or Haselblad. But for those who doesn't have too much time but wants quality photos for family/friends, get the N65 which is really good and enuf for all your standard Plus some extra needs. The thing about digital cameras is that it has pixels, for real film cameras, NO PIXELS! I believe you can never compare digital with the real thing. I mean just take a look at any photo, you can not see pixels, it's like Adobe Illustrator VS Photoshop, where the images get pixelated in PS but not in Illustrtor. OKay, I am going way off now for those who might be confused.

Bottom line: Get a real camera digital is for the web and lazy people, yes you can up load and all that stuff, but for me, I can print my 35mm on 36x40 in my lab and if anyone wants to see some of my prints, I am gladly to show the link of some of my big prints I am in the process of scanning my negatives and slides(I am an ART student). GoOd luck everyone. I went through the site to check the price, it was okay about 8am today....might just be updating the site or something. keep checking.

Why don't they have the Nikon F5 or some of the good f2.8 lenses?? It would have been nice if they had it.

When I ordered on Saturday, I got the MSN 20% off along with Photoalley's promotion, and got a order confirmation number. I will only know it really worked, however, when I check with the CC company and I recieve the product. But it seems good to go for me.

I too had difficulty getting an order to go through Photoalley this past Friday evening, close to midnight. Error screen after hitting final confirmation. Tried three times, same result. Called PhotoAlley Saturday morning. They said the problem was not theirs, but that I should "check with Microsoft". My reaction: yeah, right. That's like trying to get help from the IRS. And the PhotoAlley rep insisted that there was NO way to put the order through via telephone and still get the 20% discount. At least she was pleasant about it.

Happily, I tried one more time and was able to get order to go through yesterday. The only thing I did differently was go back to the Microsoft Passport site, open my account info, and fill in my birthdate. Oddly enough, this is cited as a "mandatory" piece of info in the Microsoft Passport database, but I wasn't prompted for it when I first signed up there. The Photoalley screen order confirmation did show the MSN 20% discount. I didn't bother trying ebates and I understand that hasn't worked for some posters here.

ETLA,

Just in reply to your comment:

<< digital is for the web and lazy people >>

I just find it odd that you then say:

<< I am in the process of scanning my negatives and slides >>

I think the site is just getting SLAMMED by mad traffics cuz when is the next time you will get deals on digital/SLR camera deals like that??? ehh~ Never??! and they got some really nice accesories as well. Just make sure you got throu msn fine and get email confirmation, I am sure that credit card will not be a problem since they indicated the discount on the checkout already. You can dispute if they don't honor it and get full refund, I did that a few times for other deals on other sites and told them I will and I did give them bad feedback on BizRate and other rating sites. I immediate get phone calls or emails alone with discounts/coupons for free. Just keep trying, try to use Netscape and Fast secure connections.

My wife took advantage of the Passport to get a Canon and the Tamron lens. Only 2 problems: 1) even though the order was placed Thursday night and everything is in stock, the order status is "HOLD"; 2) didn't get the extra $100 since the order was placed Thursday. Still a good deal, if they ship.

I placed an order for the CoolPix 950 at Photoalley yesterday. I received an email shortly after that confirming my order with both the $100 off and the 20% off. Total was $519.96. I went through ebates too, so should be another 5% off (of what amount I'm not sure.)

I'll also have to agree with the comments here about "real" cameras vs digital. Technology has a long way to go before I quit shooting slides with my Canon EOS equipment. That said, Photoalley has some good deals on Canon equipment too. The Elan IIe is said to be a nice SLR, and with the discounts it's only $292. I curently own an A5E, 630, and my favorite: the EOS RT; so I can't comment on the Elan IIe. They also have the EOS 3 for $960 after discounts, but I wouldn't recommend anyone spend that much unless they are already sure they enjoy the hobby.

Okay, say I were to get a Nikon body and a set of Nikon lenses. What would be a good one to get? I was looking at the Tamron 28-200mm f/3.8-5.6 Super Macro II for Nikon AF - but if you guys say it's not good, then I won't get that. Any other suggestions for a comparable lens?

That Tamrom 28-200mm seems to be very reasonable choice for starters and amateurs. However, IF you want a really good optics, you should NOT go with the cheap low-ends anyway, even Nikon's. That 28-80mm 3.5-5.6D (that you're talking about, i believed) is somewhat also cheapo. It MAY BE superior than the Tamron, but i doubt that the difference will be noticable.

SO, my words of advice is if you want something at longer tele, go for Tamron. It's cheaper and more fun when you don't have to swap your lens between shots. If your budget is short, go for the cheaper one. You'll always have time / money to buy more equipment soon.

For me, although i'm using Sigma 28-70 f2.8, i'm still thinking about buy that Tamron 28-200.

ETLA,

BUt to answer a few people's questions, it really depend on what you want to shoot, I do a lot of street photography and I like to used medium format cameras like Pendex or Haselblad.

You might want to really take a look at your camera again, I bet it'd read something like Pentax and Hasselblad.

I agreed with you that if you want to buy a SLR camera, any amateur might want to go with Nikon. Not that i that Nikon is any better Canon, but I hate Canon with that silver body.

FYI, i'm using my old EOS10s. Still thinking about going for the new EOS 7.

I'm considering the N80QD and the Sigma 28-80mm lens. I'll probably pick up the UV Filter and circular polarizing filters too. Any thoughts?

I agreed with everyone and "TON" that made comments on cameras.

I think if you want to get a real SLR camera, just go with a good lense. Think about it, it is most likely to be with you for a long time, why get a cheap lense? Personally I love Nikons and I have used Canons, Pentax, HasselBlad, Mamiya, Fuji, Toyo, and I still like Nikon the best. It's just My Honest Opinion. I would buy the Nikon body + Nikon Lense. Plus all the Nikon lense are interchangeable it's a great brand~!

ETLA: The other option for me is to buy the 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5D AF Zoom-Nikkor lens - my only concern is its Macro ability. Do you know how well those can do?

nikon has the best lenses, but interchangability is a myth. more interchangable than trying to use an AE-1 with an EF lens, sure, but not completely. canon's lenses are almost as good, their bodies are almost as fun as minolta's, and the ring motor lenses are really easy to work with and don't change focus when held vertically

Off topic but relevant to ETLA's comment:

Film is just as limited a medium as digital - I'm sure everyone here has seen as grainy photo. The truth is that for the moment, in the consumer market film resolution bests digital. That isn't likely to last for more than maybe three years. There are professional digital cameras on the market today that will easily beat film. Granted, they go for tens of thousands of dollars, but the point still stands: you shouldn't be making sweeping comments about comparative quality.

tri...i just read an article about new ccd's that have higher resolution than film. and while they are quite expensive now they will be affordable in a couple of years.
