if you want Macro ability go with another lense with Macro, one lense will not do it all for you to the extend of your choice. But back to digital talk, I still believe that film are the best and no matter how affordable and crazy technology gets, good photography must come from film and especially large format cameras. But I don't disagree with the high tech stuff now, I love'em, hope everyone get something from PhotoAlley, 800.com, or Mercata. Happy Holidays~!

Here's another plug for the Canon S100:
Go to photoalley.com
Canon Digital Elph S100: 499.99-50.00 coupon=449.99
Use the phreakin(I LOVE TAKING MONEY FROM GATES)Microsoft Passport link.
20% off, free shipping.
449.99-90.00=359.99!

I got mine from the Staples deal this past week, and two more comin for friends. I love it! I haven't even RTFM, and I am still flying with it's ease of use! Love this cam! (It is replacing a piece of shiznit Agfa CL50)

As to the whole film vs digital...DIGTAL ALL THE WAY! If George Lucan can use it to make the next Star Wars, then it is good enough for me!

tke96, how would you rate the 100's image quality overall? I like the fact that it's so small, but I'm concerned that it comes with a trade-off with image quality. I have read that its pictures are a little soft. what do you think? I'm trying to decide between the s100 and the coolpix 950. Thanks.

Really it comes down to preference. I kinda liked the small size of the S100. Steve's Digicams gives a great review of all the digital cameras. The coolpix is cool looking, the S100 is tiny, coolpix is better on the optical zoom. I mean I could go forever.

I haven't seen any "soft" colors or pics as of yet...about 100 pics taken in 3 days. I am very impressed with the photo overlay option on the S100 though...makes for great Quicktime VRMLs. I made a 360 degree shot of my classroom (I'm a teacher) without even RTFM. So I would say s100 has quite the ease of use.

Another thing to look at is if a mail in rebate is worth the gamble...some would say no. Regardless, I have really enjoyed finding all sorts of deals on the S100 this week!

I own a Nikon FM2 (Silver Crome). It is in an excellent condition (like new), and I have original lense, strap, and case. I am actually planning to sell it. If you are interested in it, please email me at finkl@scientist.com. Thanks.

Lore, I would not compromise for a Sigma lens if you are going for a Nikon N80QD...
I have heard good things about the Nikon 28-105 mm.
This is an advice coming more from reading the opinions of people at
www.photo.net rather than my personal opinions about the lens.
My N65.28-80mm,Strap,Batteries kit is in Colorado right in some UPS godown waiting for the final leg of its journey to my home

What I found particularly appealing in it is the multiple exposure support
I don't think even the rebel 2000 has and nor did the N60.
It is also 1/3rd lighter....

What would you guys, pro's suggest:
Nikon N80
Canon Elan IIe
Nikon N65
Canon is an old model, but it has all the bells and whistles too.

It's hard to make a decission.

older nikon lenses are compatible with newer nikons.

mats -

i have the elan iIe. nice but the focusing system is not as sophisticated as the rebel 2000. too bad that store does not stock the new 7e. i am a canon guy so i do not know about the other cameras. all this camera reading inspires me to go shoot some more now.

Lore,
thats a dream setup !!, you are going to have a good time. Which Tamrac bag did you get. I am trying to decide what to get and am completely lost as far as bags are concerned.
Did you split up your order on multiple orders to maximize the saving ?
100 dollars off on 600 dollars
and 25 dollars off on 200 dollars
if you didnt - call them up and they will credit it
i made my purchase on thursday before the promotion and they still gave me the credit back - i will always consider them for purchases even after the promotion is over

Mihir:

Yeah, I did split up the orders. I split them up just like you said - $200 and $600. The first order was the $529.95 camera and the Tamrac Zoom Traveler 4 Bag for $81.95 (damn that was expensive!). The second order was for the lens, the batteries, and the filters.

I've been reading up on the N80 reviews. A lot of people have mentioned that the AF dial on the back of the camera falls off with minimal use; NOT GOOD! I hope it doesn't happen to mine.

A note to stilinsm:

Not all of the AF lenses that worked with the N2020 will work with the N65. I am looking at upgrading my "dead" N2020 to the N65 and I have an older 28mm Nikon AF lense that does not have the four "sensors" on the lense to interface with the new N65 body. You need to check and make sure that the lenses you have will work. My Nikon 50mm AF and 35-70mm Zoom AF will work with the N65.

I'm also Canon guy when come to the SLR stuff. Nikon AF is kinda slow compared with Canon. I heard that it got improved over the last couple years. But I never had my hand on Nikon since N8008. Even worse, N6006 that i tried is extremely poor where the light is low.

Anyhow, for digital camera i opt to Nikon. I got my 950 about 1 year ago and have been in love with it since. With rebate + current discount, it is still tempting for me to be 2nd 950.

HEY!! Everyone, i tried to order something last night but all i got is error message and reference # blah blah.... Anyone got it to work now?

The site failed for me two different ways Saturday (one where it gives refererence and 800 number, another where it gives database timeout and tells you to email system admin). I just did it first thing Sunday...

I would phone in, they have to be very busy! This wasn't an option for me on Saturday night.

The only GOOD ORDER is one that gets an email confirmation (within minutes).

broadwayblue,

I'm really into Canon SLRs but I went with the Nikon 950 for a digital camera, although the Canon S100 is still very tempting. The Nikon offers a few more features that were important to me (3x optical zoom, excellent marco, more manual modes, greater choice of image size), but the S100 looks to be a great camera to just stick in your pocket and carry around. If you live near a store that carries these you could go and take a look. I checked out the S100 the last time I was at Staples and it's a really neat little camera. I better stop writing now or I'll end up going and buying the S100 too.

BTW, if you go to www.dpreview.com they have a feature where you can pick cameras to be listed side by side comparing the features of each one. Really great site.
