for certain things, you do need specific gear, but by and large it is all about determining what about what you're seeing you want to capture...

Very good advice. I have lots of expensive lens and an SLR and I have come to conclude that the photographer is 90% of the puzzle and most these shots can be taken just fine with a P&S as long as the lens has the zoom capibility. Sure the photo will probably be determined not to have been taken by an expensive SLR lens if one looks at the picture hard enough but to the untrained eye, most people probably would not notice the difference and come away thinking it is just a great photograph.

thanks! what did you do to the last pic to make it look so much better? The post-processing results of the last pic is especially outstanding

It takes me eons to post-process sometimes because I really start to like the possibilities. For example, on that first pic, I wanted to desaturate it to the point of it being almost B&W and then jack up the red and blue saturations to bring out the dome and cross. I think it looks much cooler than the real thing. And at the end of the day, I do this to create what I think is artistic. Not what someone else thinks.

As for that last pic...hmmm. Slight increases in brightness and contrast. Some sharpening. Added the vignetting. Boosted the saturation a little. That's about it.

All these were taken with my Canon SD600, in manual mode. They were taken on my various travels this year, and haven't had any post-processing. I apologize for the heavy compression on some of these. I realize the banding is unsightly, but I don't have time to upload a higher-quality copy at the moment.

It's hard to pick a favorite, but I think this would be it: Grand Tetons

Ammo macro
Lily
Bangkok at night
High-elevation flowers - I was really wishing for manual focus and aperture controls with this one!
Field of flowers in the Sawtooth Mountains
Atlanta, Idaho
My best panorama - excuse the stitch lines

I intend to read up on HDR and post-processing soon, hopefully some of those techniques may improve my photography

Too bad the car is blurry and the background is in focus.

Jules, you pimp your Canon gear out in every dslr thread, but you haven't posted any shots yet. Surely your gear doesn't collect dust all year...

I was thinking the same thing, I'd really like to see the car

You guys have inspired me to start practicing today. I am charging my AA's as we speak.. going to try to figure out the manual settings today.

Hehe that reminds me collecting dust is probably better than collecting salt. After a Rebel got splashed good, I'm real careful with the 5D although the sensor needs cleaning.

Pic of a pushpin

Link of some stone tiles in backyard (invert colors in Paint ftw)

Pic of my trashcan (again, invert colors ftw)

Pic of a lizard I cought in backyard

I wish I had photoshop but it's sooo expensive...
I used the still pic mode of an aging Canon camcorder (about 300 bucks)... works surprisingly well, I suppose...

Same pic as above, taken about 6 hours later.
More from Oia, Santorini.
Yet another.

Oia, Santorini: Has to be in the Top 10 of the World's Most Picturesque Destinations!

Edit: Links fixed!

Great shots!

Santorini is beautiful. It's almost impossible to get a bad shot there. We stopped there on our cruise back in October. Shame we were only there one day, could've stayed much longer. It was just about everyones favorite port.

I shoot mainly sports, but I'm going to try to do some landscapes as soon as I get a chance. Some of my favorites from the past year.
