for certain things, you do need specific gear, but by and large it is all about determining what about what you're seeing you want to capture...
Very good advice. I have lots of expensive lens and an SLR and I have come to conclude that the photographer is 90% of the puzzle and most these shots can be taken just fine with a P&S as long as the lens has the zoom capibility. Sure the photo will probably be determined not to have been taken by an expensive SLR lens if one looks at the picture hard enough but to the untrained eye, most people probably would not notice the difference and come away thinking it is just a great photograph.
