We have made upgrades in hardware and software to our lab.
Some of the workstations had PS7 and some CS2.
Installed CS5 on new workstations have but also had to install PS7 on my own for conversion perposes.
The largeformat printer we have the client software can use TIFF or JPG but for some reason crashes with an overflow when CS5 JPGs are sent to it, Hence having PS7 to load and resave JPGs and they go through fine.

I have checked color profiles, and many other settings in both PS's and are identical.
There is a 36k difference in file size on a 10M JPG when saved between the two PS's with PS7 being larger.

Any clues what might be the difference in CS5 JPG over PS7 JPG?

Did you ever run any preview/demos of CS4 with that large format printer? My guess is that if you can still find a preview/demo copy anywhere online (olderversion.com?) you'll find that it works like a champ and that it's just CS5.

I'm only saying that because I had the same problem with JPEG format from CS5 when attaching them for use with my internet fax service. I flailed at the tech support over at Metrofax and they were awesome, taking me through loads of tests and helping me confirm it's *just* CS5. I tried to get help from Adobe but they were totally brainless and kept regurgitating help docs that weren't related at all. Finally I gave up when I realized I'd have to give up full access to my fax service just so they could see the problem first hand. (I also installed a PDFWriter printer driver that works almost as good as saving out to JPG, I just can't easily browse sent items with thumbnails.)

I did the same thing as you during trouble shooting.. comparing the JPG settings when saving and just like you said, there was a slight decrease in file size, showing that *something* was different but nobody was able to help me find it.

I would LOVE to be able to go back to JPG so if/when you find the problem please post a follow-up as there's definitely others seeing the same issue.

Thanks!

Never used CS4, Most machines around our lab have been running Win2K and CS2 was the latest that would run on them,,, I ended up building my own personal workstation using Win7,, Tried CS5 on it and didnt like that they changed alot of the command structure and it ran slower then PS7 for the small callages we do (Yes CS5 was alot faster in the render area but smaller images didnt matter),, So I stayed with PS7 for now but the rest of the new workstation are saving in TIFF but that uses alot of serverspace.

Hope more chime in.
Thanks.

PS,, You can use Infranview to load and resave the JPGs as well.

Try it with progressive jpeg setting turned off. Some devices cannot read it.

I just looked at the difference in adobe saving a file and acdsee saving one using a hex editor.
adobe puts the color management information in the jpg header, acdsee did not and saved it just like it brought it in.
Try using save for web or device in PS and turn off the CM stuff.

Well, No luck for me, I tried every configuration and restarted it after every change and still no change.
Unless CS5 is influenced by Win7 x64 and not influencing PS7, I dont have a WinXP machine around anymore to check that possibility.
