Photoshop Q: White to transparent?

You guys are smart...Is there an easy way in photoshop to turn all white background into a transparent background? I can't figure it out. Seems like it should be easier. I have to work around text in the image.

What I normally do is add another blank layer, make it white, then delete the background layer. Make another layer on top of the white and start drawing there. Before you save, hide the white "background" layer, and it will make it transparant. Good for making PNGs.

Argh. Well I used to be able to do this, haven't been successful the last few tries though.

Can't get the inside of the D for some reason. Think that's pretty much the only problem though.

-Select your image using your preferred lasso tool
-Copy your selection and paste it on a new layer
-In your layers window, disable layer visibility for the background layer (click on "eye" icon)
-Go to your Actions window and under Video Actions, click\expand Alpha Channel from visible layer
-Hit the "play" button
-File>save as> .png

thanks folks. Though steam doesn't accept sprays in PNG form :X - If I save it in VTF OR tga form the white background reappears. Think I can take it from here though. Thanks again.

it's been awhile since i've used PS, but for a simple image like that, i would: make a transparent background layer, go back to the main layer, use select>color range to select the white and then hit delete.

argh I suck so bad at photoshop. I'm just going to keep the white background and get some sleep.

edit: woo! got it working! Actually looks better on a white background though so all that trouble for nothing. Still love photoshoping...always a challenge for me

File new > and change the background contents dropdown to 'Transparent' instead of white. If you've already started just make sure you have another layer and just delete the locked background layer.

Almost perfect except for the white inside the "E" drives me mad (obsessive tendencies!). How would I go about getting rid of the white inside the E without having to start the whole process all over?

edit: doh, now all the lettering is showing up white in the game for no reason. Still a transparent background but the lettering is white. FOR NO REASON.
