PHP mail() problems

Alright here's my situation. I have a server box at my house that I set http & ftp servers on. At college, I'm able to access the box's servers with its IP. Duh.

Now the problem is, Comcast could change that IP at any given time, thus inhibiting my ability to access the said servers on it. So I decided to make a "simple" php script that would check every 24 hours for a new IP (using the $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']) function, and if it wasn't the same as it was 24 hours ago, I'd have it email me saying that the IP was changed and the new IP is whatever.

Now I have it done up to the email part. The mail() function executes, yet it doesn't send me an email. I set up a freeware SMTP server on my box, but it doesn't seem to be accepting any connections. Anyone have any ideas that can help? Maybe somehow configuring outlook express to do it on my box?

That would require $ that I do not have as of now. Plus, getting this to work is the challenge.

Dynamic DNS is free from dyndns, have another look. A service like this is really the way to go. That said, your problem could be your isp blocking any smtp connection attempts to servers other then the ones they run - they do this to slow down spammers. You should be able to use your isps smtp server to send the email, address is set in php.ini I believe.

Ah very awesome. I never knew that, thanks.

Now, stupid question, but how will that help me? Because if the IP changes, the dynamic domain will change as well, right?

That's why they offer the various Clients that can be used to automatically update their servers with IP address changes.
