You guys/gals at anandtech have always come through for me in past, hopefully you can help me with this next challenge.

I have two hotel conference rooms sharing roadrunner cable internet for my event (a business case competition). Each room is going to be used for a internet research center. Users will likely only need bandwidth for webpages (html stuff). In order to distribute the access (about 40 users in one room, and 15 users in the other), I've located some nice Cisco 2900 series switches and netgear hubs.

My issue is this: People will be coming in and out of these rooms continuously. It may not be feasible to man each room at all times. This hardware is a bit pricey and I would like to not have a single device stolen or damaged.

There is not enough time to install ports and wire the rooms so I can hide the swithces and hubs in a IDF or closet of some sort. I am basically going to have to lay cable from the devices to the point at which a user will place their laptop. [People stealing the cables is acceptable].

Right now, I am toying with the idea of building a wooden box from home depot stuff, in order to conceal what hardware we are using and to make the devices more massive in size to deter theft. I can then also make holes so I can secure these wooden boxes using a chain and lock or a Kensington cable lock. This is a bit ghetto, I know.

I am contacting the hotel to see if they can help, but I need a backup plan.

Any ideas?

Update:
Go to http://www.pac-safe.com to see my solution. It worked out perfectly, just fyi. Thanks for your help everyone.

I think Kingston and some others make mini motion detectors for laptops, you put one on the laptop and if it's moved at all they alarms go off. I would think you could add one of these to the router as well (heck duct tape it on the side while your there)

If you check out some of the band/ music stores (ala Sam Ash, Guitar Center....) they have "Portable 19" rack equipment for PA, Amp, Effects, MIDI modules, etc. You could mount your stuff into one of those (with one-way lock screws), then chain it down to something (with like a bicycle chain/lock). Some even have built-in carts /wheels to help move 'em around.

A three unit portable rack is ~$100.00.

Good luck

Scott

Scott,

I checked some racks at Guitar center. Its not going to work. They all conform to some pro audio form factor. And when they don't, it just won't fit the Cisco switch I'm using. I think I'm going to head over to Home Depot and try to find some inpiration over there.

Thanks anywyas.

This would be bad if someone just accidently bumped it or had to move it for some reason.

I know "fer sher" that the racks fit: I have a half-rack unit (21 RU) at home with six Cisco routers and two Cisco switches mounted in it (all one rack unit / 2500s, 2600s, 2950s.....).

They even have the same screw spacing.

Are you sure you were looking at the 19" racks?

They had 'em as small as 5 RU and up, fixed, portable, with casters, even a soft-side case.

Maybe your salesperson was confused.....

Good Luck

Scott

Thanks scott, but I found a $54 solution to my problem. I'll keep your advice in mind next time around.

For $54 dollars an armed gaurd will eat all the breakfast (Doughnuts) and take the equipment himself.

What was the $54 solution?

Can you explain how those products helped you?.. did you just put one of those nettings over the equipment?

pretty much.

I netted two stacked switches, and then looped the ground line around a joint on a very heavy table (not the talbe leg of course).

This, of course, is not "perfect". Someone can come in with some high grade cutters and take it, but if I wanted to prevent thieves like that, these switches wouldn't be just out in the open.
