Pick a game, any game, for me to play

So I've been without a PC for about three months now. Moved for work and all of my stuff has been in storage, but I am finally going to move into a place in a week or so and will get my PC back.

Having been away from any type of gaming for so long, I want to play something once I get up and running, but I have no idea what. So I thought it would be fun to just ask people to vote for what I should play.

Whatever gets the most votes, I promise to buy and play for a minimum of 6 hours (assuming the game is at least that long).

Rules

1. Any genre or style of game (can be SP or MP, FPS, RTS, etc.).
2. Can be new or old but must be something I can purchase (or is legally free) with relative ease (digital or hard copy; Amazon and ebay are fine).
3. Should not cost more than $100 (no super crazy rare games that I can only buy from ebay.co.jp).
4. Running a modern PC on Windows 8.1, so please nothing that will be difficult to get going on that OS.
5. Please do not just pick something like Big Rigs, or whatever it is, to screw with me. I'm looking for stuff you actually enjoy.

I think that covers everything. I know this is kind of dumb, but I'm excited to finally get my stuff and to actually play a game because it has been so damn long! :awe:

Thanks in advance!

Viscera Cleanup Detail has been a lot of fun, surprisingly. $8 on steam or from the developer. Tiny toe in the water, so to speak.

Ancient Domains of Mystery.

An old old Roguelike that's being modernised via crowdfunding. The creator updates the public version every so often and the last one should have the new tiles in

Witcher 2 is a must have. The entire list could probably fit in the budget
Following games I recommend based on replayability, I go through them once a year, some of them I've been paying for nearly a decade now:

Faces of War/Men of War &mods ( the older ones)
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory (tweaks keep it looking good still)
Defense Grid (sequel will be out soon too)
Sins of a Solar Empire ( with or without Star Trek mods)
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (max out the difficulty, after a few days of playing that you will scan rooftops for snipers whenever you leave the house)
IL 2 Cliffs of Dover (if you dare take on simulators)
Stalker & mods
Rise of Nations
FEAR 1&2
Hitman: Blood Money
Penumbra
Kerbal Space Program
Supreme Commander

Fallout 3 and/or Fallout New Vegas ultimate editions. I think they are $20 each on Steam. That will keep you happy and busy for awhile.

I think I actually own two copies of Fallout 3, but I've never been able to get it run. Have not tried since my last upgrade though, so maybe it would work now.

Some stuff I have not heard of recommended above; very cool. Thanks and keep 'em coming!

Tales of Maj'Eyal. You can play it for free even. I think I have around 400 hours played according to steam.

A solid Roguelike but I prefer ADOM. Definitely spent too much time in ToME too XD

Stupid question of the day; what's a Roguelike?

A Rogue like is simply a game that doesn't allow you to reload a previous save, but does save your progress when you quit. This means that you can have a long adventure that lasts longer than one play session, but that any decisions you make are final, and if you die, it is permanent.

May I suggest To The Moon? It is quite short, and has SNES style graphics, but is very memorable.

Interesting. Thanks.

You might wants something short and SWEET to ease you back into gaming. I recommend Brothers: A tale of two sons http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/brothers-a-tale-of-two-sons

It's short (I think it took me 7 hours to finish and get all Steam achievements). It's unique (there is nothing else like it from a control scheme perspective). It's beautiful. But it's also emotional (that can be good or bad). I'm not ashamed to admit this game made me shed a tear.

You MUST have a dual stick controller to play this game: you control two characters (brothers) on the screen simultaneously and they must work together to advance.

For an RPG, Divinity: Original Sin (old-school in new clothes) or stuff that's been suggested already
For action, Tomb Raider (2013) or Batman: Arkham City
For FPS, Dishonored (stealth) or Borderlands 2 (Diablo but shooting) or Crysis 3 (eye candy)
For adventure, The Walking Dead Season 1 and 2 (must play one before 2 for full impact) or The Wolf Among Us or Broken Sword 5 (not sure if playing previous 4 a must or not)

For MP, Diablo 3 (joing the guild!) or Titanfall (people dump on it here, but contrary to their whining, it's not dead, and is fun) or any MMO with a decent showing among people you want to play with.

For indie, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (requires controller), anything by Klei

I just finished "The Vanishing of Ethan Carter". Definitely recommend it to old school gamers willing to play games at a slow pace. It's a short game, roughly same length as Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, which I also enjoyed playing. As the other poster mentioned, controller is required for Brothers.

BTW, all of the games I listed in the previous post run on my sig rig, one or two may have required a secret handshake to get running on 8.1.

While I'm at it, Company of Heroes is another title to play. I can't count how many times I replayed the mission to defend against the counter attack on Carentan. Limbo was a good game too, Swapper had it's charm too.
Love these threads, always a hidden or forgotten gem to be found.

Smite. It's free, but I think they still have a special to get all current and future gods for $29.99. Third-person MOBA.

After a long and bloody battle for the cell block, the rioters get into the armory and go wild :awe: Cutting the power did not deter them!
