It is if you use it to gain entrance to someone else's property without their permission, but then, it's really the act that's illegal, not the device.

it may be 'illegal' in some states, but i think burglars mostly use brute force. they'd get caught real easily, futzing around for 45 minutes with this little "bent toothpick" device.

if you lock yourself out all the time, pay the hardware store $0.99 for a couple spare keys & hang them around your neck like a latchkey kid. this thing is like carrying a sledge hammer on your tool belt in case you lock your ball pein hammer in your trunk.

This is only somewhat related, but my son bought a slim jim from the dollar store and popped open my car door in 5 minutes. I had thought possession of burglary tools was a crime, but I guess selling them is not.

Are guns illegal because you can kill people with them? Same thing with lockpicks. In my experience I have had a couple of times when I needed to pick a lock... for example, when the last IT guy locked the case of the computer whose modem had died, keys nowhere to be found. 30 seconds, a pocketknife and a bent paperclip later and I had the case open. Picking locks is a fun and useful skill!

I bought this at a local spy store, had some fun picking the locks of co-workers office in order to play practical jokes.

I once (after picking the office lock) stacked about 8 of those big water cooler bottles (full of water) on a piece of cardboard near the door. Locked the door behind me and tugged on the cardboard until the water bottles moved against the inside of the door... then I yanked out the cardboard completely, leaving several hundred pounds of water on the otherside of a locked door. Took the guy about 10 mins to get into his office and he was totally baffled how the water got there.

You really need to pick a lock when... you wake up middle of the night and needa go to washroom, but you found out that the door is locked - somehow.

It might be useful only if it has other tips. you're better off doing a google search for "MIT lockpicking guide" and reading up on the subject. it takes practice to pick locks. don't expect to buy that thing and start picking locks open right away.
per the suggestion of the MIT guide I used street cleaning machine bristles as raw material to make my own picks.
I practiced but was never very good at it. my friend who learned with me could do it pretty well.

here's a link to get you started.

One of my professions is locksmith

Unless you are a skilled craftsman like me those things are worthless
Also they are only meant for household locks not automobiles

I know how to pick locks! Once you learn, its pretty easy. Now I feel locks offer VERY little to no protection.

I currently do not have a kit, however, I would rather buy a regular kit than one of these tools... besides you still need a tension wrench.

LilRiceBoy, the kit has a tension wrench attached on the top (check the link), but twenty bucks plus shipping for a single wrench and pick is definitely not a hot deal. I bought both my sets for about $35, which had a bunch of nice picks, several tension wrenches, broken key extractor, etc. everything you'd need for household locks. Places like lock-picks.com have the real stuff that's worth getting. That and a plug spinner, and I've only ran into a handful of doors I couldn't get through. Back in school, I used to do a little "hacking" as my MIT friends used to call it. For about $60 you can get a lockpick gun which opens 95% of doors with no effort whatsoever. Of course, anything really worth getting into (Residential Life, academic buildings etc.) were protected by Medeco locks (i.e. unpickable). In most states, most of this gear can only be sold to certified locksmiths and/or lock resellers. And like someone else mentioned, this gear will open just about NO cars made in the last 20 years.

if u think regular locks from home depot offer no protection, then get one of them military security locks. where the key has ball bearings on the sides.

i have one of these... it's good for picking file cabinets and stuff around school, but that's about it. if you want to pick real locks, get a real set.

I believe that in many states, carrying around with you any "locksmithing tools" is actually illegal unless you can produce valid certification. Most states consider you to actually have the "intent to trespass" or "intent to burgalarize" even if you just keep it in your trunk. So just keep that in mind.

but as many of our fellow anandtecher's mentioned, go with a real kit and learn how to pick locks. It's a lot more exciting and functional in the long term.

Can anyone dig up some info on that?? I know google is my friend, but I'm on dialup and kinda lazy right now....

I agree with Bobartig and getting a REAL set. You can get a very decent set in a leather carrying case for about $30. I wouldnt waste money on a picking gun though....
