Picked up PNY 6800, how about OC'ing??

Hey all, Picked up the PNY6800 deal from CompUSA this past weekend. It doesn't seem to be much of a step away from my 64MB card when playing FarCry but it IS better. I also know that FarCry is still a pretty buggy game anyway so I am taking the performance with a grain of salt. as I have nothing else to compare it too as of yet. (waiting for X-mas for D3 and HL2 , and I am 32 years old LOL)

Now I have been told that these cards can be overclocked pretty successfully and even the possibility that I could open some more pipelines (which I know is hit or miss) Now even though I understand these facts pretty well, I do NOT know how to do it.

I am looking for a hand as I have searched the web and all I am seeing is the GT and ULTRA models being overclocked with no good tutorials on the "vanilla" 128MB cards.

Is anyone willing to post a "walkthrough" or tell me what I need to do on overclocking this card successfully, I want to get more performance but I don't want to push this thing TOO hard as I cannot afford to have to replace a card that I fry.

I ain't ascared of doing anything, I am however cautious as I am not one to waste money.

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

New system, new card etc, And maybe I was a bit harsh about not much of a step, the graphics look a ton better but maybe I was expecting too much LOL.

Thanks for the link but that just tells me about the pipes, I am also looking for a good tutorial on OC'ing procedures. I have never done this before so I want to make sure I don't screw up and toast my card before I can thoroughly enjoy it

just a quick question, where'd you guys get the "recommended OC" from? I've installed rivatuner but I don't see that option anywhere. maybe some other utility?

I think the recommended oc is just an average setting that has been determined through the people that have succesfully OC'd the card, hell I have yet to find this so called recommended setting or any other info on the best way to OC the 6800NU, all I am seeing is GT and Ultra Makes me very sad because I want to get this thing running top notch when I get home tonight.

how about this for a question, Should I use coolbits to up the clock settings and riva tuner just for the pipelines? or should I use rivatuner to do the whole shebang?

I like mikey am very interested in this topic as I too just bought the PNY 6800 vanilla at Comp USA over the weekend. For $199 for a 6800, thats a very good price.

I too, am very curious to unlocking the pipes, and OC'ing this bad boy. I have read about rivatuner, and coolbits, but like mike.... (sometimes i dream he is me, like mike, i want to be like mike..) Sorry i digress into an 80's basketball ad....

but like mike i am not sure what to use for what process, and was hoping for a slighty better walk through... with the rivatuner and coolbits info...

So if any one can help out 2 30 somethings OC and open up some pipes on their new video card, that would be great!

hey Chris, everyone wants to be like Mike LOL

From what I am seeing in my jaunts around the web looking for info, most are using RivaTuner to unlock the pipes and using CoolBits to do the overclocking itself.

I am going to give it a shot and see what I get, the only thing I am looking for now in info is what the average SAFE OC is on these cards for the core and clock speeds, I am seeing people up as high as 450 and 900 which is HUGE leaps from stock, however they do not mention the type of cooling they are using which is another concern.

Hehehe,

Dont we all mike, dont we all. We are probably reading the same stuff... becuase thats what i have read too. I was hopeing for a bit of better walk through. I guess you and I can experiment together!

I am only using the stock cooler that came on the card. We could use the NV5 silencer I guess, but i dont want to take the stock fan off, becuase that pretty much voids your warranty.

From the reviews i have seen, i think a "safe" OC is probably more of a 370-380 range, and a 770-780 range. I dont think i personally will try to OC more than that. I think somewhere between a 8-12% increase is the taget "safe" zone... after that... your on your own....

use cool bits and let it automatically detect and use those numbers as a starting point. from there, go up 5mhz on the core and test for artifacts stability. once you become unstable or see artifacts, drop the speed down to the last stable artifact free setting. after you find the stable core oc, do the same with the ram. i use 10mhz increments on that.

unless your case is blazing hot, you dont really need to switch from the stock fan. the extra mhz you would get from that would likely be so small it wouldnt be worth the money for the little to no impact on perfomance.

good luck!

Sounds good to me, I will go ahead and try this at some point later in the week, the wife just informed me we had to finish our x-mas shopping tonight *CRY*

Just wanted to throw a third 30 year olds voice into the fray. My wife picked up that card for me on Black friday and was hoping people will keep posting their experience with the PNY 6800 over clocking experiment in this thread.
I have several other pieces of the system to get before I try anything, but I am glad there are everal others who want to do the same thing. (ie unlock the other 4 pipe lines and maybe tweak the speed up a bit).
If you guys get the pipe lines unlocked, please post follow ups here, that would help out greatly.
Thanks,
Shoe

I will be doing mine over the weekend... going to be a very busy week, plus the card is not staying in its current system.... The system its in, was only so i could play with it....it only has a 250 watt power supply. I will be building a new system on Friday..and theres where I will be playing with the pipes and overclocking.

ill post my results here... Asap
