Picketing at my wife's school

My wife was telling me that her school district had classes on MLK day for the first time in 5 years. What was the students and parents response? To picket the administration and HS buildings during school hours over the 'disrespect of MLK'

(The school had been open in the past but it was a teacher in service day so while the kids got the day off the teachers still had to work. I guess that is not disrespecting MLK, its only disrespectful to try and teach kids on MLK day)

Man - just think of the thousands of schools and businesses that disrespected MLK by having class/business yesterday. I wonder what the kids will think when they grow up and realize that they will most likely have to work on MLK day?

Now I haven't studied his speaches but I would have thought he would be all about teaching kids and having school on that day

I don't remember getting MLK day off when I was in school... I certainly don't get it off work now.

for most people (i.e. anyone who isn't a federal or bank employee), MLK Day isn't a real holiday anyway.

Just talked to a friend of mine, apparently he doesn't get the fake federal holidays (MLK and Columbus Day) but instead they get two days off for Thanksgiving and Xmas. Better system IMO.

Recognition days shouldn't be holidays. Kids get too many days off as it is.

It's because, in the past, President's Day was only celebrating white people.
MLK Day was the only official holiday celebrating a black person.
Now with Obama as president, President's Day nullifies MLK Day.

Place I was working at last year had for the 1st time given MLK off and took away giving on Presidents day. Now I'm at a new company this year and back to working on MLK and having off Presidents Day.

Personally I prefer having off Presidents day for no other reason than it's a better spaced day off after the Christmas/New Years holidays. Having MLK off felt to soon after the holidays and then it's such a long stretch to labor day in May.

Every school/college I've ever gone to in IN (2), MI (4) and PA (1) has had class on MLK day. Her school is in the Detroit Metro Area
