I can see the necessity in Australia, but I personally think it's funny as hell to see the guy in a three piece suit driving a freshly washed Lincoln Navigator with chromium bullbars around a city here in the US. I don't like stuff that doesn't serve a purpose.

The're polished aluminium, not chrome.

Zemmervolt Steel bullbars went out with the dinasores about 25+ years ago, aluminium is cheap in Oz (that why the mag wheels for Mercedes are made here)

Remember not all those in luxury suvs keep them on road, ie: my friends jeep grand cherokee. It has a bull bar now btw hehe, makes a nice handle to hold onto while climbing around the jeep on the rocks!

Yes, the useful ones are aluminum, but I have seem chromium bullbars. As I mentioned, the chromium bullbars only show up on trucks that will never have any use for the bullbars.

EDIT: Soybomb, I understand that there are a lot of people who actually do use their trucks in such a way as to need the bullbars, in fact I know several people who do. However, I have also seen bullbars and brushguards on a lot of trucks that have clearly never seen anything worse than a stone driveway.

Actually aluminium alloy bumber replacement bullbars weigh no more than the standard steel bumper bar that's being replaced.

I know that because I replaced the standard steel bumber bar (is that what Americans call fenders?) with a full alloy bumper replacement bullbar &amp; it was actually just slightly lighter.

But when it comes to modern cars with plastic bumpers yes they weigh more, but they are a lot lighter than they look.

Mind you the cheaper older steel bullbars weigh a ton.

Actually bullbars have become a bit of a pose thing in Oz, its extremly rare to see a 4WD or a pickup without one. They are official dealer certified acc's.

The Pedestrian Council of Australia really hates them &amp; its lobbying to get them banned. But that's the whole idea to protect you car's paintwork when you hit a cow, kangaroo, person or Hyundai (I bet the 4WD that KOed the Daihatzu didn't even get scratched, well that is if the bullbar was mounted correctly).

Actually vi, I've heard of brushguards and bullbars. Typically I hear bullbar as being the large tubular bumper. The brushguard is a smaller piece, usually with close bars or wire mesh to protect headlights and such, or so I thought

Eventually bullbars will be parsee &amp; all those suburban mums in Oz who drive arround in multi-ton 4X4s that look like the've never been on a dirt road (&amp; go no further than the local shopping centre), will have their bullbars fitted with winches &amp; power tak-offs fitted at the rear, just to be one up on everyone else.

in a city like Houston, they seem more like car ramming gear than anything else. I know why car wouldn't stand a chance against that stuff. Gotta love the SUV craze. I think I'll stick with vehicles that can take the curves.

I was looking into getting a TJM bull bar for my truck, but there isn't a local distributor for them. The one I knew of apparently ended their contract and TJM came and took the stuff back to Oz.
