Pics: Anyone collect geodes/crystals?

I just have one that my mom gave me when I was a kid. It's about four pounds and 6"x5"x5".

I had a bunch back in the day, but I gave them to one of my little cousins.

They were all way smaller, round, and cut in half.

Because I took a picture of a big crystal that I got as a child? It's not like I'm watching Star Wars or dressing up like anime characters.

naw man, because you started an entire topic on an internet message board just to show a pic of a big crystal that you got as a child to a bunch of other geeks (myself included). And to inquire as to wether they have any crystals of their own that they would like to post pics of.

I dunno, just strikes me as quinticentially(sp?) geeky...

Those are called "mine flowers" where I live. They are found mostly in mines.
the one you have is (probably) CaCO3 (calcit?). It looks similar to quartz but it is weaker (can not scratch glass, its edges will crumble). Quarts can scratch glass (ordinary glass).
Similar to some I saw in this museum.

If you ever visit Put-In-Bay in Lake Erie, there's a winery there that has an underground geode so large you can stand in it (there's stairs that go down there and its part of the winery tour).

My Dad did his grad school work at Indiana University. He was taking some geology classes and did a lot of caving.

Somehow he ended up with a TON of geodes. We use them to line my mom's gardens.

Perhaps the coolest thing he has is an actual meterorite a little bigger than a football. It crashed through the deck of one of his students and they gave it to him for extra credit. I understand it could be worth quite a bit of money, but it's so cool to have I'd never sell it.

I've mentioned it here before a couple times, I always forget to take pictures of it when I'm home visiting them.

My grandmother actually gave me one of these "mine flowers". She went to a cave in New Mexico and one had fallen from the cave so the guide gave it to her. Its illegal to pull them down yourself though.

I have a three inch ball of polished quartz somewhere. It's not all milky like most of them I've seen, just a little bit of "stuff" on one side, but other than that totally clear.

I don't really collect them, but I've got a few around the house. The biggest ones are only about two feet, though. Apart from fossils, about the only kind of rock I've ever made a point of collecting has been meterorites, so I have an assortment of those, including a couple of meteorite daggers.

I've gotta take my kids down there one day soon, it's not far from my home. I've been driving right past that place two or three times a week for almost three years.
