That I don't know. Apperently in a shortcut there is a setting you can switch to run in "Win95 compatibility mode" but I don't really know what that means.

I have a question for you guys....right now and until the end of August my computer is primarily a gaming machine. After that I go back to school, so I want to move up to Windows NT. I do not want WinXP Personal. So I'm trying to decide between Win2k Pro and WinXP Pro.

One major factor is that my Win95 OEM CD is a qualifying product for the Win 2000 Pro (Retail) Upgrade Version. Does anyone know if Win95 will be a qualifying version for the Win XP Pro version? Since XP Personal is really the upgrade most Win95 users will want, but I don't.

I have Win95 OSR2.1 OEM full version, and Win98SE Retail Upgrade version, do these version qualify me for the Win XP Pro retail upgrade?

(I have a couple threads in the OS category if you'd like to argue me one way or the other right now I'm just looking for an answer to that simple question, otherwise WinXP is out of the running, Win2k Upgrade is 2/3s the price of the full version, and WinXP pro definately isn't worth 1/3 more to me).

Noriaki: Actually my school listed the academic price of just a liscense of Win2000 (which is all you need legally since you've already stated in another thread that you have the media) for only $56 (US). The upgrade is $46 (US again) but for $10 I'd go with the full liscense (you could then use your original Win95 liscense on another computer or just give it away. can't legally do that w/ the upgrade). You mentioned that in August you go back to school so I'm guessing you're a student of some sort, so you shoulde be able to get those prices.

Yes I'm a university student, I'm a Work Study term right now. My PC is just an overglorified combination typewrite/nintendo (albiet with much better games) right now But when I'm at school I use it for programming and all that sort of good stuff.

So I can get a License for just $56US eh...where do I get that from?

MS's website?

I think the best thing about Windows XP is that you can switch between users and not have to close programs.. now that is TIGHT!!!..
But it must need hella good computer for that to run smoothly right?

I hope they have a "CLASSIC" theme for XP since all that junk doesn't look like it will be too functional

Noriaki: All the info I have is that you should contact ASAP Software (specifically Rep. Jessica Porter 1-888-883-1022). Ask them about obtaining a Windows 2000 liscense. I'm not sure if the $53 thing (not $56 after I checked) is only for my school (Clemson) or not, but there's a good chance it's available to any educational customer.

I just started reading this thread but check this link out about the Windows XP activation I agree with the post that this goes a little further than just protecting copywright. The XP licence is bound to that PC forever. Even though you purchased the software and if you format or upgrade or junk that pc and install it on another pc, XP will think that it's on a new PC and will ask for an new activation code that is available by phone only, and of course you will have to pay heavy for that phone support. There are also rumors that licences will be time restricted, in other words you will have to renew every year through paid phone support. Because I test software I formatted three times this year already, this is gona be a nightmare, imagine IT.

Thanks NicColt I had heard that XP required online activation through Microsoft. (Even mentioned it in another thread about XP). This in conjunction with the fact that it is easier for another pc to control your? Hmmmm. Microsoft may indeed have found a solution for piracy. Copyright protection, controlling your ability to upgrade or change any hardware and the ability to delete or alter any files they see fit.
Wonder if Microsoft will be "checking validation of hardware and software" on a frequent basis. (Read as will they be snooping people's systems more than they do now?)

but I am sure we will come up something to conquer this, something like a VIRTUAL server of MS or something like that!
