People lighting up in public, I remember that. I remember when I was real little my elementary was by the high school and we had to walk through it and there was a break room where kids hung out and you would see them smoking on campus!

I remember when we moved to NJ in the late 80's... it was the first year that they banned smoking in schools. my 2nd grade teacher was such a raging bitch that year because of it.

There's still a few malls around here that look like they're from the 80s. They don't build indoor malls anymore.

There was a cool one not too far from me that had a clock tower with a huge video wall and mini putt course at its base. Also had a big arcade. Those got taken out when they renovated unfortunately. It was actually the mall from Noam Chomsky's film on his propaganda model. So you can see what it looked like in its heyday. It's nice and modern now and still has the clock tower, but all the really cool stuff is gone. Actually have to go there this weekend because I'm out of tea.

I don't ever remember a time where people smoked in malls. Restaurants yes but never in the mall itself. That must have been banned by the late 80/early 90s.

Yeah. Depends on the state, but Minnesota had a "clean indoor air act" in 1975 and Michigan had one in 1986.

I forget when it happened exactly, but I think Michigan had mostly banned it in bars and restaurants too some time in the late 1990s. (I remember the smoking sections of most restaurants disappeared when I was in high school.) But that must have been before the "official" workplace indoor smoking ban in 2010.

I was just a kid in the late 80s. That dead malls links with the section on Shopper's World (Framingham, MA) brought back some nostalgia. By the late 80s, that shopping mall was mostly dead because of the huge competition from the newer Natick Mall barely a half mile away. The only thing left was Toys 'R Us which was the Mecca of stores for a kid. I remember you had to walk into this dark alley way like section of the mall and the entrance/exit to the store was a single door. It was pretty packed inside the store totally unlike today's versions with wide open spaces.

Ah nostalgia.

They completely leveled it 10-12 years ago and now it's a big box strip mall.

Remember when people could smoke on airplanes? I think that might still be possible in Europe but not over here.

I remember flying as a smoker, intentionally getting a seat in non-smoking so that I could be farther forward in the cabin away from the bathrooms, then sneaking back to the smoking section to have a cigarette.

It's a mall, the provenance of young popular teenagers. And fat people didn't leave their houses more than necessary (and also avoided cameras) in the days before fat acceptance came into vogue.

Yep, I noticed that. The one pic of the little kid with a giant Coke, I thought "that's when it started".
