Superstores mainly... Walmart allowed people to buy just about anything you could buy in a mall from electronics to kitchen stuff to automotive to clothes to groceries.

Decentralized stores like Walmart used to have perception of easier access. You don't have to park and walk to the mall...then walk through the mall to get to the store you want to go to. People want to park close, go in, make their purchase, and get out... Even though Walmart isn't that easy, many malls suffer from being in congested areas and having too many stores and not enough close parking.

Most busy/successful malls these days actually sell more high dollar retail items at MSRP. It all depends on where you are and the retailers.
